With the 2011 Cheltenham Festival just three weeks away, it was another busy weekend of racing across the UK and Ireland, with trainers and connections keen to get one last run in before the festivities get underway at Prestbury Park next month. Nicky Henderson is one of the trainers who had an excellent weekend, with a four-timer at Ascot on Saturday, whilst Alan King enjoyed a treble at Wincanton. It wasn't such a great day for Paul Nicholls however, whose Gold Cup hope Pride Of Dulcote suffered a fatal fall in the Betfair Ascot Chase and favourite for the Kingwell Hurdle Silviniaco Conti finished fourth of the five starters.
Starting off at Ascot, it was Riverside Theatre who gained most of the plaudits winning in the Ascot Chase by ten lengths. The untimely demise of Pride Of Dulcote aside, the King George VI runner-up romped away from Gauvain to score in style at the Berkshire track and was backed into 6/1 second favourite for the Ryanair Chase with bookmaker Victor Chandler following this win. Last year's runner-up Poquelin heads the ante-post betting market at 4/1, whilst former Paddy Power Gold Cup winner Tranquil Sea is the 7/1 third favourite.
Earlier in the card, Nicky Henderson's afternoon had gotten off to a flyer with 6/5 joint favourite Master Of The Hall impressing in the Reynoldstown Novices' Chase. The seven year old jumped brilliantly throughout and burnt off Billie Magern in second place and the blundering The Minak to win by six lengths. That was three wins from four races this season for Master Of The Hall, although his only defeat did come at Cheltenham, so despite this impressive win on Saturday, Victor Chandler only moved him into 20/1 for the RSA Chase next month. The RSA betting is still headed by Time For Rupert at 9/4, who has scored twice at the Prestbury Park this season and with 8/1 bar the rest he looks the one to beat.
Sprinter Sacre landed the odds in the Trisoft National Hunt Novices' Hurdle ran over two miles landing Henderson his treble and VC Bet were keen to clip him in for the Supreme Novices' Hurdle as a result. This was an impressive win for the five year old and Chandlers go 7/1 clear favourite about his chances in the Supreme, headed in the betting only by 9/4 favourite Cue Card and 6/1 chance Spirit Son.
At Wincanton, the feature race was the Kingwell Hurdle, won by the Alan King five year old Mille Chief. It was a small but competitive field, with the Paul Nicholls trained Silviniaco Conti sent off the 7/4 favourite. It was Mille Cief who outbattled Celestial Halo in a photo-finish however, but his odds for the Champion Hurdle remained a 14/1 chance with bookmaker Victorchandler. Forgotton horse Dunguib was nibbled at though, following a win in a Grade 2 event at Gowran Park, last year's Supreme favourite is now a 12/1 in from 16's for the Champion Hurdle.
Smad Place was also a Wincanton winner for trainer Alan King in the last race of the day, landing the odds as 1/4 favourite. The juvenile will head to the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham now where he is currently a 12/1 joint fourth favourite with VCbet. Houblon Des Obeaux, was a notable market mover in the Triumph betting, landing the opener at Haydock on desperate ground, with Chandlers clipping the Venetia Williams owned four year old into 16/1 for the race next month.
Elsewhere on a busy day at Haydock, Back In Focus won the Grade 2 Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle at odds of 16/1, beating off odds on favourite Court In Motion by six lengths. The Howard Johnson trained six year old leapt to the head of the betting for the Cheltenham race of the same name as a result and can be backed at 7/1 with VC. Finally at Haydock was the odds on victory in the Hunters' Chase by Baby Run. Last year's winner of the Foxhunters Chase at Cheltenham is 7/2 favourite to do so again in 2011 for trainer and son team Nigel and Sam Twiston-Davies.
