Seventeen runers are due to go to post in the Totesport.com Becher Chase at Aintree on Sunday, in this listed handicap chase which might give us a few pointers ahead of next year's 2011 Grand National. The sponsors Totesport make Meanus Dandy and Gullible Gordon the 7/1 joint favourites ahead of the race, in what is always a competitive betting handicap. There's a stellar list of former winners of the Becher Chase, which is the first race of the season at Aintree which is run over the Grand National fences. Becuase of this, a lot of trainers like to get a run over the fences for their Grand National horses and in the past, a few have gone on to do the double. Amberleigh House and Silver Birch have both run the double in the last ten years, whilst the likes of last two year's winners Vic Venturi and Black Apalachi have gone on to be well fancied in the Grand National as a result.
Irish trainer Dessie Hughes has won the race for the last two season's but doesn't send over any runners in 2010, leaving Paul Nicholls with the two market leaders Meanus Dandy and Gullible Gordon. Nicholls trained back to back winners in theis race in 2006 and 2007 with Eurotrek and Mr Pointment, with Meanus Dandy looking to have the better chance this year on paper. Carrying 10-13 the seven year old looks well handicapped to follow up on his win at Wincanton at the beginning of November. Gullible Gordon also has a Wincanton win to his name this season, but is five pounds worst off than his stablemate.
Next in the betting come 8/1 chances Maljimar, Hello Bud and Merigo. Maljimar was a faller in last year's Grand National and this will be his first appearance on a racecourse since then. The ten year old trained by Nick Williams is without a win now since January 2008 and has yet to complete a race at Aintree. Hello Bud is an interesting runner, with the Nigel Twiston-Davies stable in superb form and jockey Sam Twiston Davies looking for another big race win following his success aboard Little Josh in the Paddy Power Gold Cup last weekend. The veteran twelve year old pulled up on his last appearance at Sandown in April but that followed a fine performance in the Grand National finishing 5th. He also finished fifth in this race last year, so the fences shouldn't provide too much of a problem.
Merigo represents the best fancied of Sunday's runners for next year's Grand National. Totesport go 20/1 about his chances next April and 8/1 his odds for Sunday. Winner of the Scottish Grand National last season and the Eider Chase the year before, he is obviously a top class stayer and the three mile two furlongs at Aintree on Sunday might be right up his street.
Notre Pere is another stayer with ability, having won the Welsh Grand National in 2008 but the nine-year-old has been a bit hit and miss since, winning the Grade 1 Guiness Gold Cup in 2009 but pulling up in the same race this year. At odds of 9/1 he might be worth considering each-way on Sunday.
