Cracksman And Barney Roy At The Head Of The Betting
There was a big shock on Thursday as Ulysses was scratched from the final declarations which means that it is Cracksman and Barney Roy at the head of the market.
Cracksman has enjoyed a fantastic season for John Gosden with two recent wins in the Great Voltigeur and the Prix Niel to his name. A son of Frankel, Cracksman has improved with every run this term and with connections swerving the Arc, they have decided to drop him back to 1m2f for a tilt at the Champion Stakes.
Cracksman is the improving class horse of the race, and as such he is the 2/1 favourite with Hills to claim the big Champions Day win.
His closest rival in the betting is a fellow 3YO Barney Roy (7/2), who will be running in the blue of Godolphin this weekend. The Richard Hannon trained son of Excelebration is a Group 1 winner down at a mile, and he has run two good races in the Eclipse and the Juddmonte, without a winning, since stepping up to 10f.
Highland Reel Might Run A Big Race
The front two in the betting do look the two to beat with the classic generation perhaps a step ahead of their older counterparts in 2017.
One older horse who can never be counted out at this level is Highland Reel, and he has been a money earning machine for Ballydoyle. The 5YO has won both the Coronation Cup and the Prince Of Wales's Stakes, although most of his best runs have come up at 1m4f, which would be a slight worry.
He has however saved some of his best runs for Ascot in the past and few would be surprised to see the son of Galileo out run his price of 7/1 with William Hill.
Poet's Word (6/1) is to be respected for Sir Michael Stoute following his 2nd place behind Decorated Knight in the Irish Champion Stakes last time out, but on the bare form, he has plenty to find with the best of these. Each-way chance at best.
We also have the French Derby winner in the field in the form of Brametot (7/1) and the rain around Ascot in the past 24 hours could well play into his strengths. His 5th place in the arc is top class form, and although he still has something to find with Cracksman, he is an each way contender for France.
Cracksman is clearly the one to beat on Saturday following the defection of Ulysses and the rain further plays into the strengths of one of the best 3YO horses in training. Barney Roy always runs well but the John Gosden trained horse has i,proved with every run and will be too good.
