he latest QE II Betting is now available following the latest forfeit stage which reveals, the Richard Hannon trained, Canford Cliffs as a well backed favourite in what looks to be a seriously hot field of runners for this Group One over 1 mile at Ascot on Saturday. VC Bet make the three year old 11/8 favourite in their betting market, with his 2000 Guineas conqueror, Mafki next best at 2/1.
Aidan O’Brien as he often does dominates the latest entries list with six runners, although it seems certain that Cape Blanco for one will miss the race in favour of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe to be run a week later. He does however also have the brilliant Rip Van Winkle left in the race, who will be looking to return to winning ways after he was beaten by Cape Blanco in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown at the beginning of September. Before that of course the ‘Rip’ had trotted up at York when winning the International Stakes in August, but that came after he had to accept second best to Canford Cliffs in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood. Whether he can reverse that form over the same distance in this is open to doubt, which is why his price is only 7/2 to win the race, also with Victor chandler
Of the other Ballydoyle hopefuls, the once highly regarded Steinbeck is an interesting entry and has earned the chance by back to back wins, first in a listed event at Killarney which he followed up by winning a competitive Group Three, at the Curragh last week. On early season form he has it all to find with Canford Cliffs however, who beat him 6 lengths in the Irish 2000 Guineas and 5 lengths in the Group One , St James Palace Stakes. He would be an each way chance at best and has odds of 20/1, which are more than honest.

At a cost of £20,000 Godolphin have supplemented Poets Voice, winner of the Group Two, Celebration Mile at Goodwood at the end of August. He too would have to improve to win at Group level, particularly with the likes of Canford Cliffs and Mafki in the field.
In many respects this race looks set up to be the showdown confrontation between English 2000 Guineas winner, Mafki and Irish 2000 Guineas winner, Canford Cliffs. They have ran against each other twice so far this season, with Mafki winning the 2000 Guineas with Canford Cliffs in third, but the tables were turned at Royal Ascot six weeks later, when Canford Cliffs won the Group One St James Palace Stakes with Mafki running a poor race back in 7thplace. In between those races Canford Cliffs also won the Irish 2000 Guineas. Since then both colts have gone from strength to strength, Canford Cliffs won the Group One, Sussex Stakes in great style at Goodwood and Mafki beat the great Goldikova and Canford Cliff’s high class stablemate, Paco Boy when taking the Group One, Prix du Haras De Fresnay over 1 Mile at Deauville in August. The form suggests that these two are two of the very best milers in Europe and on all known form should have the race between them.
