There are seven Days of fantastic racing to look forward to once the annual 2010 Galway Summer Racing Festival begins on 26th July. Seven days and 51 races represent non-stop action and whilst the quality of racing is not always obvious, the competition is always fierce, particularly in the two big features of the week, the Galway Plate and the Galway Hurdle. Bookmakers have already created markets for both of these popular races, Bet365 for instance have Majestic Concorde as the 9/1 favourite for the Galway Plate and they quote Overturn as the 7/1 favourite for the Galway Hurdle.
Although final declarations are still to be made, the Galway Plate is likely to have a big field which will include a significant challenge from leading English trainers. Those from England who have entries currently are, Paul Nicholls, Nigel Twiston-Davies, David Pipe and Ian Williams. Of those four only Nicholls has tasted glory in the Blue Riband race, he saddled Oslot to victory in 2008 and this year he will be looking to repeat that success with the consistent six year old Five Dream.
Galway Festival Racecards and Galway Plate Odds Comparison.
There has also been considerable betting interest in the Nigel Twiston-Davies trained gelding, Grand Slam Hero, winner last week of the Summer Plate at Market Rasen. He has been cut into 10/1 by several Bookmakers, but is still available at a great price of 16/1 with Bet365.The Twiston-Davies yard can of course do little wrong these days and it would surprise no-one to see him take this race to add to the Cheltenham Gold Cup and others from last season.
Favourite in fact for the race is the Dermot Weld trained, Majestic Concorde, who won the Galway Handicap at the Festival in 2008. He was last seen running a very game fourth in the Chester Cup in May and will come to this race extremely fresh. We all know the strength of the Weld hand at Galway and would put no-one off backing the favourite, particularly with excellent odds of 9/1.

The Galway Hurdle looks to have a better quality field than normal, with the two favourites, Overturn, trained by Donald McCain and Dirar, from the Gordon Elliott yard, looking set fair to battle it out. Overturn was an outstanding winner of the Northumberland Plate at the end of June and also won the Grade 2, Scottish Champion Hurdle in April. This is outstanding form and far above what would normally be required to win this race. At 7/1 with bet365 he looks difficult to refuse.
Dirar however, is no slouch either, he has won his last three starts in good quality races, however we think he is not quite on a par with Overturn and we would rather take him for the forecast in this race. Dirar is 9/1 also with Bet365.com.
