The Paul Nicholls trained Denman bids to join a top class roll of honour by taking his first Punchestown Guinness Gold Cup on Wednesday at the annual Punchestown Festival. The ten year old has been installed as a warm order favourite with odds of 5/4 from bet365 with next best being the Irish pair of Cooldine and Joncol, who are both around the 9/2 mark.
The race in fact looks set to be one of the most hotly contested for some time, with last year’s winner, Notre Pere and the Queen’s Barber Shop both looking to end their season’s on a high. Denman of course was second last time out in the Cheltenham Gold Cup behind Imperial Commander, but is said to have come out of the race in good order and is ready for his final race of the season. It is almost certain that he will have champion jockey, Tony McCoy on board for the third time this season due to the injury sustained by Ruby Walsh at Aintree.
2010 Punchestown Guinness Gold Cup Odds Comparison
In the Cheltenham Gold Cup Denman had the highly regarded, Willie Mullins trained, Cooldine well behind him and there is nothing to suggest in the form that Cooldine could improve enough to reverse that result in this. However, Joncol, the Paul Nolan stable star, is very definately a progressive type and should improve again from his win in the Grade 1, Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup in February, where he had a neck advantage on the line over Cooldine. He looks the biggest danger to Denman and is likely to get shorter than the 9/2 currently on offer from Bet 365.
Barbers Shop has shown nothing of his potential this season and it is hard to reason why he should make the trip over to Punchestown. He is clearly held by Denman on all known form and whether or not he can get amongst the places is also doubtful. Nonetheless he is one for each way backers to consider and is reasonably priced at 16/1 to do so.

J’y Vole, also trained by Willie Mullins, ran a good race last time in the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival when third behind Albertas Run. Before that he was a 15 length winner of the Grade 2, Red Mills Chase at Gowran Park on Good to Soft over 2½ miles. There are some doubts about his ability to stay the trip and go on this ground, but Mullins is confident that he can overcome the doubts and run a big race. He is being backed antepost and is currently 6/1 with BET365
