Seven entries remain for Saturday's 1942 Was A Vintage Year Mares Hurdle (registered as the Warfield Mares Hurdle) and Kentford Lady Grey looks capable of handing Emma Lavelle a second win in the Grade Two contest at Ascot. The 6-year-old is a 7/4 favourite with William Hill in the latest odds and she looks to have plenty of improvement in her.
Lavelle won this race with Labelthou in 2008 and Kentford Lady Grey has shown enough to suggest that a step up in class won't be a problem. The 6-year-old arrives on the back of a couple of wins at Newbury and Kempton, with the latter coming over Saturday's three mile distance. She won by six lengths at Kempton and even though she arrives on worse terms against several repeat opponents she continues to improve and the ground looks ideally suited at Ascot. Lavelle could send her to Cheltenham Festival for the David Nicholson Mares, where she is an industry best priced 16/1 to beat wondermare Quevega.
Our Girl Salley is priced 12/1 for the David Nicholson Mares after suffering a late setback before the festival last year. However, she faces a big test on her first start in Britain as Prunella Dobb's mare concedes 5lbs all round and she steps up to three miles for the first time. The 7-year-old was an impressive Grade Three winner at Leopardstown last time but she looks a little short at 10/3 this weekend.
Elsewhere, Paul Nicholls' Violin Davis (9/2) was third to Kentford Grey Lady at Kempton last time, although she is 11lbs better off at Ascot. The 6-year-old was six lengths back that day and hasn't finished outside of the top three in her last eight starts, although the fact she failed to quicken on her last two efforts at three miles will be a concern.
Kim Bailey's Kaffie takes on this trip for the first time and is priced 6/1. The 7-year-old has shown an impressive jumping style so far and the way she coped with heavy ground over two and a half miles at Exeter last month suggests she has plenty of stamina.
Cloudy Spirit has already shown an ability to last this trip as Reg Hollinshead's 7-year-old was fourth to Kentford Grey Lady last time. She conceded 10lbs that day and the consistent mare could be worth an each-way looks from odds of 6/1 after winning over three miles at Bangor last March.
Another with decent each-way claims could be Queen's Bay as the progressive 6-year-old is available at 16/1with WilliamHill.com after finishing second to subsequent Lanzarote Hurdle winner, Swincombe Flame, last time. Colin Tizzard's mare stayed on strongly over the two miles at Wincanton and it will be interesting to see how she copes with the step up in class and trip.
Love Of Tara completes the field for Jennifer Mason and the 33/1 shot has plenty to prove. The 10-year-old made an exciting start to her career and is a winner over three miles, but she endured a tough season last year, pulling up twice, and she has it all to do when stepping up from decent efforts against mediocre opposition on her last two.
7/4 Kentford Grey Lady
10/3 Our Girl Salley
9/2 Violin Davis
6/1 Kaffie
6/1 Cloudy Spirit
16/1 Queen's Bay
