The entry list for this year's World Hurdle has been announced and it features a stellar lineup of 46 names headed by dual winner Big Buck's. The race is due to take place on the third day of Cheltenham Festival on March 17th and Big Buck's head the betting with Ladbrokes bookmakers as he looks to claim an unprecedented third successive title.
The 8-year-old won in 2009 and 2010, and is offered at 4/7 in the ante-post betting to be the first horse to ever claim a third consecutive World Hurdle win. Only Inglis Drever has achieved the feat of winning three World Hurdles in the past and Big Buck's looks well set to emulate that as he boasts a record of no defeats in ten starts since he was switched to smaller obstacles after the 2008 Hennessy Gold Cup where he unseated his rider. He stated his case at the rearranged meeting at Newbury at the end of December when he won the Long Walk Hurdle for a second consecutive year.
Paul Nicholls' horse's main rival for the March spectacle is likely to come from Nicky Henderson who has four entries for the race. Punchestowns comes in at 8/1 in the betting with Ladbrokes and looks decent value after finishing runner up in 2009 and has impressed with several Grade One wins since, although the 8-year-old could only manage a fifth place finish at Newbury in December. Henderson also has Zaynar who won the Grade One JCB Triumph Hurdle in 2009 and is a 12/1 bet, and Oscar Whisky who impressed in winning the Cheltenham and Three Counties Hurdle earlier this month and is currently 10/1.
Away from the two trainers who are in a battle to win the national hunt trainers' championship at the moment, Willie Mullins could run his recent Neptune Novices' Hurdle winners Fiverforthree, the 2008 winner and a 20/1 bet, and Mikael D'Haugnet, the 2009 winner and a 16/1 punt with Ladbrokes.
Another Cheltenham winner that catches the eye is Karabak who won a Grade 2 hurdle at Cheltenham in December and ran decently in the 2010 World Hurdle. The Alan King trained 8-year-old might just be worth a look at 14/1 after finishing fourth last year.
It is difficult to look anywhere other than the irrepressible Big Buck's for a winner, but the rearranged King George VI on Saturday proved that even the very best can be beaten. The great Kauto Star was beaten by Long Run and Riverside Theatre, and Paul Nicholls will know more than most that his Big Buck's will have to be spot on if he is to achieve that historic third consecutive win.
