The Willie Mullins trained Beroni heads the antepost market for the important Thyestes Handicap Chase this week at Gowran Park. The eight year old who won the Troytown Chase back in November has been penalised 20lb by the handicapper for that performance, but Mullins is confident that the horse can go on and complete a four timer under his tutelage. Currently Beroni is favourite to win with odds of around 9/2 but he can be backed at 5/1 with Bet365.
This race is often seen as a trial for the Aintree Grand National and it is interesting to note that Mullins won this race in 2005 with Hedgehunter, who went on to win at Aintree a year later. Exactly the same feat was achieved by the Martin Brassil trained, Numbersixvalverde, who won this race in 2006 and the ‘National’ in 2007.
Despite carrying top weight, the claims of the Thomas O’Leary trained Preists Leap cannot be ignored. Winner both in 2008 and 2009, this 10 year old has had two runs already this season, including a creditable second place behind Golden Silver in the Grade Two Hillyway Chase at Cork in December. He was priced at 20/1 on both occasions when claiming his back to back victories in this and despite the heavy ground, punters should get similar value about him this year too.

One horse who does look good at the weights for this is the Tony Martin trained Lochan Lacha, who was running extremely well before unseating his rider last time out. Martin is of course notorious for placing the right horses in the right handicaps and he may well come up trumps again in this. Lochan Lacha is a best price currently of 7/1 with Skybet.
Others who may also run well we think will be 2010 Grand National candidate Arbor Supreme. We do not think he will win, but a good performance may tempt us to support him for Aintree.
