The King George VI Chase at Kempton looks set to be the scene of the latest Long Run v Kauto Star dual, with bookmakers expecting the young starlet to reverse the form on the old master. Defending champion Long Run is the 5/4 favourite for the 3 mile contest on Boxing Day, while Kauto Star is an industry best priced 4/1 in the latest odds with William Hill.
Nicky Henderson's Gold Cup hero Long Run succumbed to a surprise defeat to Kauto Star on his seasonal reappearance in the Betfair Chase at Haydock in November and will bid to turn the tables. The 6-year-old had been expected to be too good for Kauto Star after winning this race in January last season, before going on to become the fourth King George winner in the past five years to go on to win the Cheltenham Festival feature.
However, Kauto Star rolled back the years after trainer Paul Nicholls ignored calls for his 11-year-old to be retired. The four-time King George winner justified his trainer's faith by breaking the track record at Haydock and he is expected to go for a third Cheltenham Gold Cup win in March. He was third in this race last year and will bid for a record fifth win, with Nicholls positive about his chances and Hills going 9/4 in the latest odds for the 'without Long Run' market.
Kauto Star's stablemate Master Minded takes on three miles for the first time on Monday and the 8-year-old is widely expected to get the trip, with Hills pricing him 11/2. Nicholls' second string is renowned for his efforts over shorter distances and he quickly made up for a disappointing Old Roan Chase effort by beating Somersby in the Amlin 1965 chase at Ascot.
Master Minded is sure to attract plenty of interest, although Somersby has some to find after finishing three lengths back at Ascot. Hills offer 12/1 for Henrietta Knight's 7-year-old to win on Monday after he was a 4/6 winner at Kempton on his seasonal debut. However, he has been a beaten favourite twice since and has plenty to find here.
Philip Hobbs' Arkle hero Captain Chris looks a better punt at odds of 8/1 with WilliamHill.com. The 7-year-old has won three from three at Kempton and the weather forecast should ensure the ground suits on his first start over 3 miles. He is expected to get the trip, although the fact he has been struggling with the human equivalent of a cold recently, allied with him unseating Richard Johnson when looking a likely winner on his reappearance in the Haldon Gold Cup will be a huge concern.
Elsewhere, 2010 Hennessy Gold Cup winner Diamond Harry is a 16/1 chance after finishing fourth on his first appearance in over a year in the Betfair Chase last month. This year's Hennessy runner up Planet Of Sound is priced 25/1, while Nacarat, who was well beaten in the Charlie Hall Chase, looks to have plenty to do from 50/1, as does likely pace setter Golan Way (66/1).
5/4 Long Run
4/1 Kauto Star
11/2 Master Minded
8/1 Captain Chris
12/1 Somersby
16/1 Diamond Harry
25/1 Planet Of Sound
50/1 Nacarat
66/1 Golan Way
