Big Buck's dominance of the staying hurdle division continued on Saturday when he romped to a fourteenth successive victory over hurdles. William Hill immediately clipped Paul Nicholls' star in for yet another World Hurdle win in March as he moved from 4/5 odds on favourite to 4/7 for the Cheltenham Festival Grade One.
The 8-year-old hacked up to win the Long Walk Hurdle for a third successive year at the weekend and in the process chalked up a fourteenth consecutive win. He is now one victory ahead of Bula's thirteen consecutive victories and just two behind the all-time record of sixteen, set by Sir Ken in the 1950s.
That record looks well within his grasp after yet another stunning display of his staying powers. Ridden by Ruby Walsh, the 30/100 favourite looked to be in a bit of trouble when Dynaste opened up a four length lead three out. Dynaste proved to be yet another pretender to Big Buck's crown though as Nicholls' gelding ruthlessly hunted him down to lead two out and go on to secure an eight length victory.
David Pipe's Dynaste was left floundering by his tussle with big Buck's and eventually finished fourth as yet another hopeful fell by the wayside. Big Buck's, who opened his season with victory in the Long Distance Hurdle, is now the highest rated horse in training and it leaves a huge question mark over whether anyone can deny him a fourth successive World Hurdle win at Cheltenham Festival in March?
The biggest threat to the three-time defending champion is likely to come from Ireland and Willie Mullins has three hopefuls well backed in the latest odds. Thousand Stars is available at odds of 7/1 with William Hill and the French grey has performed consistently in graded company, winning the Morgiana Hurdle this season, and has decent form at Cheltenham after the 2010 County Handicap Hurdle winner finished fourth in the Champion Hurdle.
Mullins' Mourad chased Big Buck's home last March when third in the World Hurdle and the 6-year-old is a 14/1 punt this time, while stablemate So Young, third in the Neptune Novices, is available at 16/1 after winning a three-runner race at Punchestown on his reappearance.
Elsewhere, Nicky Henderson's Oscar Whisky is available at industry best odds of 8/1 with WilliamHill.com after the Champion Hurdle third bounced back from a fall in the Coral Hurdle to win the Relkeel at Cheltenham. The 6-year-old beat Thousand Stars in the Aintree Hurdle in April but much more will be needed to get the better of Big Buck's you fancy.
Meanwhile, Charles Byrnes' Solwhit, who is perhaps best well known for his duals with Hurricane Fly on the Emerald Isle, is a 16/1 chance. The 7-year-old has consistently been overshadowed by his great rival and was a hugely disappointing sixth on his British debut in the Champion Hurdle last March.
It leaves Big Buck's as the stand out competitor in this division and few would back against him equalling and surpassing Sir Ken's sixteen wins in a row.
4/7 Big Buck's
7/1 Thousand Stars
8/1 Oscar Whisky
14/1 Mourad
16/1 Solwhit
