2010 Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Imperial Commander makes his seasonal bow at Haydock on Saturday in the Betfair Chase (registered as the Lancashire Chase). Bookmaker Ladbrokes has installed the nine-year-old as their 8/11 odds on favourite for the Grade 1 contest, a race in which he narrowly missed out on last year, finishing second in a photo to outgoing Gold Cup champion Kauto Star. Despite winning the Gold Cup last season, the Nigel Twiston-Davies trained horse has yet to convince punters that he can perform away from Prestbury Park, with six of his seven career wins coming at Cheltenham. The horses official rating suggests he should be a twenty length winner on Saturday and with the stable in good form and a horse that goes well fresh, he's difficult to oppose. He was unlucky not to win the race a year ago and a similar running should be too hot for his competition.
Only seven runners go to post in the 2010 Betfair Chase, but the field has amassed nearly fifty wins between them. Second in the betting is the 3/1 chance of Paul Nicholls, What A Friend. Owned by Sir Alex Ferguson, What A Friend looks like he'll be the natural successor to Kauto Star and Denman at the Ditcheat stables, having impressed last season winning both the Grade 1 Lexus Chase and Betfair Bowl. A good display at Haydock on Saturday could see his odds for the Gold Cup get slashed, where he is currently a 12/1 chance with Ladbrokes in behind his two stablemates and the 5/1 favourite Imperial Commander. It certainly looks as though the seven-year-old will be the main competition for the market leader.
The grey Nacarat is certain to take them off at a good gallop when the tape goes up at 3.25pm and was last seen winning the Bet365 Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby at the end of October. Tom George's stable star finished third behind What A Friend in the Betfair Bowl before that and it's difficult to see him reversing things here. At 7/1, he's battling it out for third favourtism with the Philip Hobbs trained Planet Of Sound. The eight year old won the Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter last term, before disappointing in the Ryanair Chase at the Festival. He did however have a successful step up in trip at Punchestown at the end of last season, winning the Grade 1 Guinness Gold Cup and deserves respect here at 8/1.
Tidal Bay is the best priced of the remaining runners in the field at 25/1. Big things were expected of the Howard Johnson trained nine year old when he won the 2008 Arkle Chase and despite being an ultra consistent novice he has never really kicked on. He now turns up in anything from two and a half mile chases to three mile staying hurdle contests and it's difficult to see him figuring at the finish here.
The two outsiders of the pack are Chief Dan George at 50/1 and Atouchbetweenacara at 100/1. James Moffat trained Chief Dan George to victory in the William Hill Trophy at the Cheltenham Festival and was fancied to run well in the Grand National but didn't run in the end. Atouchbetweenacara is trainer Ventia Williams' entry and he has to go back to April 2009 for his best run, winning a Grade 2 event at the Cheltenham April meeting.

3/1 What A Friend
7/1 Nacarat
