Betting on one of the most anticipated handicap races of the season is hotting up after the five day declaration stage for the Cambridgeshire provided plenty of interest. Ante-post favourite Dare To Dance isn't guaranteed a place among the maximum field of 35 for the mile and one furlong race at Newmarket on Saturday, leaving ante-post backers facing an anxious wait.
Jeremy Noseda's lightly-raced colt needs several horses to withdraw from the race to secure a place in the final field, although race sponsor Betfred retain the 3-year-old as their industry best priced 6/1 favourite.
The son of Danehill Dancer has only had three outings to date but Noseda feels there is plenty of improvement in his colt and Saturday's race has been the sole aim. He opened his career with a third at Kempton but has since gone on to win both of his outings since, including over a mile at Newmarket last month. If Dare To Dance (8st 2lbs) does miss out on the main event, he could take on the Silver Cambridgeshire instead.
Roger Charlton, a two-time winner of this prestigious handicap, can rest easy though as his Cry Fury (8st 6lbs) has sneaked in at number 30. The 3-year-old is relatively unexposed as well, having raced only five times and the 10/1 shot was an impressive winner at Goodwood last month. A fine effort at Doncaster last time out convinced Charlton of his chances and the colt should go well here.
Saeed Bin Suroor's Man of Action also caught the eye at Doncaster last time out as the 4-year-old took victory in a handicap to lay down a marker for the Cambridgeshire. The gelding travelled well before finishing strongly to reel in and pass 9/4 favourite Eton Forever, and he is currently set to go off a mark of 8st 9lbs.
Meanwhile, John Gosden will bid to go for a record-equalling fourth win in the Cambridgeshire as he bids to emulate William Day and Jeremy Glover. Gosden won consecutive renewals in 2007 and 2008 and he enters Questioning, who is priced 12/1 in the betting with Betfred.com. The 3-year-old was a debut winner on the all-weather at Lingfield last year but has failed to add to that tally since and faces a tall order to produce a win in the hustle and bustle of this handicap.
John Dunlop's Maraheb (14/1) showed a liking for the chaotic nature of handicaps when winning over a mile at Haydock in August and the 3-year-old colt should enjoy the extra test of stamina the additional furlong will provide.
Don't Call Me, a three length winner at Ayr earlier this month, joins Maraheb at 14/1 for the race, while Charles Hills ultra-consistent (14/1) will make a first appearance since June.
Elsewhere, Sir Michael Stoute can boast an interesting entry in 16/1 shot Markazzi and the gelding should enjoy an extra furlong. The 4-year-old has a high cruising speed and should thrive on the extra test of stamina come Saturday. Tom Tate's Distant Memories (25/1) tops the weight at 9st 7lbs at this stage, but there could be a few more twists and turns in the final lineup before Saturday.
