The much awaited clash between the Aidan O’Brien trained, Starspangledbanner and the Barry Hills trained, Equiano looks set for the Group One Nunthorpre Stakes on Friday. Bookmakers report betting as frenetic on the race, for which Ladbrokes make Starspangledbanner favourite with odds of 9/4 while Equiano is just behind at 5/2.

The two last met in the July Cup at Newmarket which Starspangledbanner won by a neck in a thrilling race, but that race was over six furlongs, a distance clearly preferred by Starspangledbanner while the Nunthorpe is over five which is the favoured distance of Equiano; which is why the Bookmakers have it so close.

Of course we should not forget that this race has attracted a top quality field, which includes the incredible Robin Bastiman trained, Borderlescott, winner of this race for the last two years and who is in cracking form following his outstanding win in the Group Two, King George Stakes at Glorious three weeks ago. It is true that Equiano got the better of him in the Golden Jubilee at Royal Ascot, where he could only manage third, but he was very fast finishing that day and in nothing like the form he is in now! Although seven years old now, Borderlescott is still a very attractive looking bet at 10/1 with Ladbrokes and it is the one we will be putting our faith in on an Each Way basis
Others who must be considered are the consistent pair of Kingsgate Native and Fleeting Spirit. It would certainly appear that the former has something to find with the two favourites having finished behind them in both the Golden Jubilee and July Cup, while Fleeting Spirit hasn’t won since taking the July Cup in 2009 and also has plenty to find with the favourites. Kingsgate Native can be backed at 6/1 while Fleeting Spirit is a 7/1 shot, both with Ladbrokes
Stone Of Folca, trained by John Best is a very speedy two year old but has yet to win a race and will not have anything like the experience of a big race field like the rest. It is an abvious chance for a two year old to shine but we will not be tempted by the 12/1 on offer.
