British Flat Champion Jockey Odds: Hanagan Well Clear of Ryan Moore

With another win on the 17th July, Northern based jockey, Paul Hanagan, moved to 113 winners for the season, 27 ahead of nearest challenger and reigning champion jockey, Ryan Moore. The win forced Bookmakers to shorten his odds once again with Paddy Power Bookmakers now offering only 1/2 odds on about him claiming his first title. Moore is 6/4, while the only jockey, worth considering at this stage of the season is Richard Hughes at 16/1.

For Hanagan a champion jockey title is the least his prodigious efforts deserve, up until the 18th July, he has been in the saddle an incredible 610 times this season, over 50 more rides than the next highest. Moore on the other hand, who can obviously be a little more circumspect, by being stable jockey to Sir Michael Stoute, has ridden 447 times.

The season still has some way to run of course, officially ending in November in Doncaster meaning much can happen between now and then. However, provided Hanagan continues his huge effort, it looks increasingly more likely that Moore, will have to accept second best this time around.

In fact as it stands at thr time of writing, Ryan Moore will have a battle on his hands to finish second as he has both Joe Fanning and Richard Hughes just two and three winners respectively down on him; this makes the 16/1 about Hughes with PaddyPower a very attractive alternative bet, strangely however, there is no bookmaker offering odds on Fanning at all.

Moore won the title last season with 178 winners, which Hanagan has every chance of going past in 2010.

For our money we are going to back Hanagan even at those odds, he has a good book of rides coming up again this week and should increase his lead. We are also going to back Pat Smullen at 5/4 with paddy power to finish top of the pile in Ireland which we will double up with Hanagan for better value.
