Punchestown Champion Novice Hurdle Betting: General Miller to Take Command

Fresh from his success at Aintree where he beat Supreme Novice Champion, Menorah by a neck, in the Grade 2, Top Novice Hurdle, General Miller has come over to Punchestown to underline his great talent. He should be more than good enough to take this race too, particularly now that Dunguib will contest the Champion Hurdle later in the week. The Nicky Henderson trained 5 year old has been made 5/4 favourite with paddy power to win the race

Unfortunately for General Miller and the many who backed him for the Supreme Novice crown at the Cheltenham Festival, he managed to unseat his rider, Andrew Tinkler at the first hurdle. However, he proved at Aintree that not only can he jump, but he can do so at speed proving in the process that he loves the good ground, something that he will get at Punchestown this week.

Next best in the betting is Flat Out, trained by Willie Mullins, who ran a very creditable fifth place at Cheltenham, his trainer believes that he will continue to improve and could well be a bigger danger than the market suggests in this. He is currently a 7/2 shot with Paddypower, but punters are advised to watch the market, before lumping on him as he could drift just as easy as he could shorten.

Willie Mullins in fact has a second runner in the race, Blackstairmountain, who could only manage tenth place in the Supreme Novices at Cheltenham, but he bounced back with a good second place behind Luska Lad on heavy ground in the Grade 2, Rathbarry & Glenview Studs Novice Hurdle at Fairyhouse on April 4th, suggesting that he is very progressive. It is hard to tell whether he is good enough to take on General Miller, but Mullins is quietly confident of a big run from the 5 year old.

For our money however it is the Nicky Henderson trained General Miller who should take command of this race and would advise punters to take the price now as he is highly likely to start odds on. The Henderson yard has been in great form all season and they have plenty of confidence behind this horse, who will be ridden by stable jockey, Barry Geraghty.
