The County Hurdle Betting Influenced by the Nicholls/Walsh Factor

As we all know the Festival this year has been a nightmare for punters and it does not get any easier when trying to select the winner of the Vincent O’Brien County Hurdle. With 28 runners going to post and the favourites having odds of around the 10/1 mark, most punters would leave this race alone.

The Willie Mullins trained, Tawaagg comes to Cheltenham with a good reputation and can be described as unfortunate last time out when second to Puyol in a similar looking event at Leopardstown. He is reported as in great form at home and is fully expected to reverse form with Puyol in this. Tawaagg is currently disputing favouritism with two others but can be backed at a best price currently of 10/1 with Ladbrokes.

Also at 10/1 is the Paul Nicholls trained Tito Bustillo, the mount of leading jockey, Ruby Walsh and who is trained by Paul Nicholls. Third behind the other joint favourite in this, Bellvano, last time in a novice hurdle at Newbury, Tito Bustillo has a pull in the weights this time which should be enough to reverse that form. It is also interesting to note that Walsh has chosen this horse over Tawaagg and that the Walsh/Nicholls team won the race last year.

The County Hurdle is not a great race for favourites, with only two clear cut favourite winning in the last 15 years. There have been two joint favourites however which have got home in 2004 and 2006 which were both trained by Nicholls, who clearly has a good handle on this race.

It is the Nicholls factor that has persuaded us to back Tito Bustillo in this, believing that he has the right profile for a winner of a competitive handicap like this and at a current price of 10/1 with Ladbrokes he is worth an each way gamble.
