The Grade One, Betfair Ascot Chase promises to be both an exciting and revealing race with most of the six entries carrying Cheltenham Festival hopes.

Heading them up will be the Phillip Hobbs trained, Planet Of Sound, last seen when second behind Albertas Run in the Grade One, Amlin Chase over this course last November. Planet Of Sound was giving seven pounds away in that race but faces Albertas Run in this at level weights which should be enough to reverse the form. He is currently favourite to win the race with odds of 2/1 from Bet365 while Albertas Run is an 11/4 shot.
Planet Of Sound came to major prominence when third behind Forpadydaplasterer and Kalahari King in the 2009 Arkle Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and continued that good form with victory early this season in the Grade 2, William Hill Gold Cup Chase at Exeter, over 2 miles 1 furlong, where notably he had the Paul Nicholls trained Twist Magic well beaten in third place. Both Forpadydaplasterer and Kalahari King have franked that form since.

It was good to hear Jonjo O’Neill talking up the chances of his Albertas Run the other day, but we think 2m3f may be a little short for him and believe a bigger threat is posed by Herecomesthetruth from the all conquering Paul Nicholls Ditcheat yard. Winner of the Grade 2, Ladbrokes.com Chase at Down Royal at the beginning of November where he had Forpadydaplasterer well beaten in second, this 8 year old will come into the race very fresh. He did unseat jockey, Ruby Walsh last time out in the Grade 2, Peterborough Chase when running well but is said to be back on song and has significantly improved at home. He is a good price we think with odds of 7/2 also with Bet365
Of the other three in the race, a case can be made for Oh Crick, third last time, 13 lengths behind Twist Magic in the Victor Chandler Chase. He is a Cheltenham Festival winner, whose stable is running into some good form lately and is said to be in great form at home. Monets Garden is a past winner of the race, but is surely way past his best at this level and The Sawyer who won at Grade 3 level last time out is probably going to find one or two too good for him at this level.
