Henderson's odds of winning the Trainers Championship clipped in after Kempton glory

Nicky Henderson's hugely successful outing at Kempton at the weekend appears to have had the knock on effect of spicing up the 'National Hunt Trainers' Championship' as Coral bookmakers halved his odds of winning from 6/1 to 3/1. The popular trainer achieved a stunning five-timer to close the gap on the legendary Paul Nicholls at the top.

Henderson's winners were headed by impressive victories for Binocular and Long Run on Saturday at the rearranged King George meeting. Binocular took the Christmas Hurdle by 3 and 3/4 quarter lengths from Overturn and immediately wrestled the ante-post favouritism for the Champion Hurdle from Hurricane Fly. Long Run followed his stablemate's win with victory of his own in the King George VI Chase as he left ante-post favourite Kauto Star floundering in third, and there was further joy for Henderson as his Riverside Theatre came runner up. In fact, Long Run was clipped in to second favourite for the Gold Cup on the back of this run and looks to have the potential to give Henderson his first ever Cheltenham Gold Cup win.

It has been a golden January for Henderson as his 54 runners during this month have produced 22 winners. Meanwhile, Paul Nicholls weekend was compounded by the disappointment of Kauto Star's performance in the King George, and his odds of winning the trainers championship drifted from 1/10 to 1/5 with Coral.com, but he clearly remains odds on favourite. The reigning trainers' championship winner boasts a brilliant array of talent and will no doubt be looking to extend his lead over Henderson and retain his trainers' title.

Nicholls is currently £250,000 ahead of Henderson in terms of winnings for the season and he will be confident of adding to those winnings in the Victor Chandler Chase at the weekend. He has ante-post favourite Master Minded running at Ascot with Tony McCoy riding and Nicholls horse is currently 8/15 odds on favourite with Coral to regain the title he won in 2009.
