Dartmouth tipped to bag Yorkshire Cup win on day three of Dante festival
Friday 19th May, 2017 - 3:30pm York - Yorkshire Cup
Peter Niven's Clever Cookie will attempt to retain his Yorkshire Cup crown on day three of York's Dante festival, but the mud-loving nine-year-old will face some classy stayers in the Group 2 feature which will see an exciting field of eight runners go to the 1m 5f 188y start on Friday afternoon.
- Clever Cookie won this race in 2016
- Sir Michael Stoute has won three of the last eight renewals
- Simple Verse is a former St Leger winner

Muntahaa And Dartmouth Battle It Out For Favouritism
John Gosden's Muntahaa will head to Knavesmire on the back of a fine win in the John Porter Stakes at Newbury last month, but the 7/2 shot with Ladbrokes will need to improve on that Group 3 success and will face a much classier field in this year's renewal, which has been won down the years by some of the elite stayers.
He was a neck winner that day and shaped like he could well enjoy a step up in trip again, and he could become a real top notch Cup horse this season, but it's his market rival Dartmouth that makes more appeal at the front of the market, as he aims to hand Sir Michael Stoute his fourth win in the race in nine years.
A former Royal Ascot winner, Dartmouth showed when winning the Hardwicke Stakes earlier in his career that he can produce the goods on the highest stage, and the five-year-old owned by The Queen, has to be a leading player here if returning to his best and at 4/1 with BetVictor is the selection.
He failed to bag a win last season, but the previous year had not only won the Hardwicke, but also the John Porter Stakes and the Ormonde Stakes at Chester, and with the recent rain at York likely to prove no issues then this is the season he could become a real force in the staying division.
Cookie To Crumble, As Verse Aims To Hit Right Tune
Clever Cookie failed to build on his win in this race 12 months ago, and while connections would've loved to have seen the rain hit York this week it's hard to think that in the twilight of his career he can reach the heights of previous campaigns, and with some exciting younger rivals taking him on here then the 8/1 with Paddy Power is worth avoiding.
Former St Leger heroine Simple Verse was well beaten by Dartmouth in the aforementioned Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot, but bounced back with victory in the Park Hill Stakes, before running a respectable third in the Long Distance Cup at Ascot in October, so if she is at her best then she could be the leading rival to our selection Dartmouth and is worth a second look at 5/1 with Coral.
Best Of The Rest
Charlie Appleby's Endless Time struggled to kick on in her four-year-old campaign after a fine three-year-old season, but she did run some smart races in top-class company, so has to be considered here at 13/2 with Ladbrokes, while the likes of Crimean Tatar (7/1) and Marmelo (12/1) add more depth to what should be a cracking showpiece event.
