This Blue Square Gold Cup at Haydock Park this weekend, could easily be billed the 2009 Welsh National re-run, with the first six home at Chepstow in December going at each other again.
Le Beau Bai , who went off favourite at Chepstow, but could only manage third place, is likely to go off favourite for this too, but his trainer, Richard Lee will know that he will have needed to have improved if he is to get the better of this top quality field. The seven year old is currently a 5/1 chance with PaddyPower.
Dream Alliance, trained of course by Phillip Hobbs was the winner of the Welsh National getting home ¾ length in front of the unfortunate Silver By Nature, whose mistake at the last probably cost him the race. On the weights alone, the handicapper has been reasonable, with Dream Alliance going up 9lbs, whereas Silver By Nature has been hoisted up by 7lb, which might be enough to just about right to reverse that Chepstow form. Le Beau Bai has also gone up, but we think he is still very competitive off 148 particularly if he has improved again and after he warmed up really well with a good win over a 3 mile hurdle recently. That said we are going to stick with Silver By nature to win this race for trainer, Lucinda Russell.

A very interesting runner in the race is the 2009 Grand National winner, Mon Mome. He ran very well for a long way in the Grade Two Peter Marsh Chase a few weeks ago over this course in a race won by the evergreen top weight, Our Vic. We do not think Mon Mome can win this race however, but we think that he will come on for his last run and fully expect him to claim a place and is worth backing at 14/1 with PaddyPower.. Our Vic probably has too much to take on by carrying top weight again in this so he is probably best left alone. It should not be forgotten however that the Pipe stable have been firing winners in all season and Our Vic is well capable of winning if in top form even with odds of 25/1 from Paddy Power
Miko De Beauchene, Ballyfitz and Coe, 4th, 5th and 6th respectively in the Welsh National at Chepstow all look to have too much to do here as well, but good runs can be expected from all three.
