Thirty-four horses remained in the Hennessy Gold Cup line-up following Wednesday's first scratchings for the race, with only a maximum of eight runners able to run to their true handicap mark. As expected, Kauto Star was removed from the field which meant that there was a change to the weights, with stablemate and two time winner of the race Denman, the new top weight set to carry eleven stone and twelve pounds. The former Gold Cup winner remains the ante-post favourite for the race, at 5/1 with Bet365. Denman was second to Imperial Commander in last season's Gold Cup and finished fourth in his last appearance on a racecourse, in Punchestown's Guiness Gold Cup. Denman is giving over a stone in weight away to the number two on the card, Neptune Collonges, also trained by Paul Nicholls and with both What A Friend (10-3) and Silver By Nature (10-0) likely to miss the race it is conceivable that as few as six horses will be in the handicap come race day at Newbury on the 27th Nov.
The Ian Williams trained Weird Al is competing with Denman for favourtism in the race at odds of 5/1 with Bet 365. The seven-year-old ran impressively as a novice last season, unbeaten throughout the campaign and favourite for the RSA Chase before picking up an injury in February. His deadheat with Little Josh on his reappearance at Carlisle this season looks to be very good form following Little Josh's runaway win in the Paddy Power Gold Cup at the weekend and out of the handicap he looks to have a serious chance if 100% at Newbury.
There are plenty of other staying chasers out of the handicap who could well run big races in the Hennessy. David Pipe, the trainer of Madison Du Berlais is bullish about his former winner of this race, whilst Nicky Henderson could be sending the likes of Barbers Shop (third in this race last year) and Burton Port, a runner-up behind Weapon's Amnesty in the RSA Chase last season. Another second season chaser who is well fancied is Diamond Harry, who pulled up in the RSA at the Cheltenham Festival when well supported pre-race, whilst Ireland's big hope is the Noel Meade trained Pandorama, who has had nearly a year off the course following injury last Christmas.
5/1 Denman (11-12)*
5/1 Weird Al (9-10)*
7/1 Diamond Harry (9-10)*
8/1 Pandorama (9-6)*
8/1 Burton Port (9-10)
12/1 Big Fella Thanks (9-9)
14/1 Taranis (10-4)*
14/1 Carruthers (9-13)*
14/1 Neptune Collonges (10-8)
14/1 Madison Du Berlais (10-1)
16/1 China Rock (10-4)
16/1 Hey Big Spender (9-8)
20/1 BAR
