Shumoos could turn the tables on Gamilati and Best Terms in the Lowther Stakes at the Ebor Festival on Thursday as eleven fillies go to post for the Group Twp race. It's another strong renewal of the six furlong sprint for juvenile fillies as Gamilati heads the betting with William Hill bookmakers, but Brian Meehan's Shumoos could be ready to avenge her recent Newmarket defeat.
Meehan's filly beat Frederick Engels on her debut earlier this season but has since lost out to Gamilati when third in the Cherry Hinton Stakes. She also lost to Best Terms by a short head in the Queen Mary at Ascot as she continues to impress in pattern company. The speedy filly boasts a big weight advantage on Gamilati and Best Terms from those two Group Two defeats and she could well be worth backing at 9/2 this week.
Ante-post favourite Gamilati is penalised 3lbs for her success and is currently an industry best price of 7/2 with Hills. The Godolphin-owned filly will look to confirm her reputation as one of the leading fillies of the season after finishing runner up in her first two outings before landing the Cherry Hinton, but she could struggle against the weights.
Meanwhile, the unbeaten Best Terms has also been penalised for her Queen Mary victory and is now a 13/2 punt. Richard Hannon's filly is unbeaten in her three outings over five furlongs so far and makes the step up in trip for the first time on Thursday at the Ebor Festival, although the breeding of the daughter of Exceed and Excel suggests she could thrive for the extra distance.
Hannon is a four-time winner of the Lowther, which leaves him level with Mick Channon for all time wins in the race. Channon's record demands respect as he has won three of the past ten renewals and his entry Lady Gorgeous could be worth an each-way look at 14/1 with WilliamHill.com after making an impressive start in maidens. The filly was a runner-up on debut and followed that up with a gutsy win from Tickled Pink and fourteen others at Newmarket.
Elsewhere, Barry Hills will look to pick up one last big race winner on the Knavesmire and his Angels Will Fall is well backed at 9/2 after showing great potential so far. The unbeaten Acclamation filly won on debut at Windsor and followed that up with success in the Group Three Princess Margaret at Ascot.
The Irish bid is led by David Wachman's 6/1 shot Fire Lily, who is another that will look to turn the tables on Best Terms after she finished fourth in the Queen Mary. She thrived on the step up to six furlongs when beating After by two and a half lengths in the Group Three Anglesey Stakes, and Aidan O'Brien's After faces a big task from 25/1 in the betting this time.
Kevin Ryan's Inetrobil (8/1) has two and a half lengths to find on Gamilati from the Cherry Hinton, while Hello Glory (14/1) makes the step up to pattern company for the first time, with Sunday Times and (20/1) and Caledonia Lady (33/1) completing the field for this exciting Group Two.
