The Totesport Ebor Handicap on Wednesday at the York Ebor meeting looks like being another cracking renewal, with the top three in the betting all being backed. As had been expected, Harris Tweed will miss the race, but Martyr, Overturn and Fortuni all stood their ground and will head a field of twenty who will fight it out over the 1 mile and 6 furlongs on the Knavesmire Course. Clear favourite is Martyr, trained by the all conquering Richard Hannon who is listed at 5/1 with the sponsors Totesport.
Martyr in fact comes to the race having shown some excellent form this year, winning three top notch handicaps, including the Summer Handicap at Glorious Goodwood last month. He also ran a great race when third behind Cill Rialaig in the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot. Martyr is on a good mark and is drawn favourably in the low number stalls and is the one we shall be backing.

Donald McCain will be trying to emulate his National Hunt training rival, Willie Mullins, by saddling the winner, like Mullins achieved in 2009 with Sesenta. McCain has Overturn in the field, already the winner of several high profile handicap races this year, including the Northumberland Plate on the flat and The Galway Hurdle over sticks. He also won the Grade Two, Scottish Champion Hurdle at Ayr in April, proving then as he has since that he is a real tough horse to beat which makes it seem almost impossible that he will not be there or thereabouts. If there is a doubt it is the trip, which may be just a bit short for him, nonetheless the 6 year old can be backed with a best price of 13/2 from totesport.
The other seemingly major player in the field is the Sir Mark Prescott trained, Fortuni, winner last time out of the Investec Surefooted Handicap in June, where he had Cill Rialaig behind him who has since gone to frank the form with a good win at Royal Ascot last month in the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap. Fortuni is around the 10/1 mark with totesport.com to win the race, but punters are advised to monitor the betting very closely with this horse as a big gamble on him might prove very fruitful if followed.
