The classy Harbinger won the Hardwicke Stakes in fine style last year before going on to seal the King George VI Stakes and Aidan O'Brien's Await The Dawn will look to tread a similar path in Saturday's Group Two. The lightly raced colt is the stand out name and is 10/11 favourite in the ante-post odds with Bet 365.
O'Brien's 4-year-old has won four of five starts, including a hugely impressive win in the Group Three Huxley Stakes at Chester last time out. Interestingly, three of the last four winners of the Huxley Stakes have gone on to run in the Hardwicke at Royal Ascot with great success - two wins and a second.
The extra two furlongs shouldn't hold too many problems for Await The Dawn when he steps up to one and a half miles for the first time on Saturday. However, for those who like their trends it could be worth noting that only one of the last fifteen Hardwicke winners hadn't won over the trip before.
Await The Dawn looks a classy sort though and the rest could well be competing for place money.
The main competition to the Ballydoyle colt could come from a strong Godolphin team, who go in triple-handed. Their leading hope looks to be 10/1 chance Campanologist for Saeed Bin Suroor. The experienced 6-year-old is a winner over the course and distance, and was winner of the 2008 King Edward VII Stakes and runner up in the 2009 Hardwicke. He was well beaten by So You Think in the Tatersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh last time out, but that was a rare blip and looks worthy of each way money this weekend.
Campanologist's stablemate, Passion For Gold, is a lightly raced colt who missed the last year and a half but looks tempting at 12/1 with Bet365.com. The 4-year-old was a Group One winning juvenile and showed he had lost none of his class on his return this season as he produced two solid performances, including a listed win over 12 furlongs last time out.
Mahmood Al Zarooni's Calvados Blues is the other Godolphin entry at odds of 10/1 and the 5-year-old faces very different conditions after impressing with a third place in the Dubai Carnival's Sheema Classic.
Luca Cumani also lays claim to a strong challenger in Drunken Sailor, who is industry best priced at 8/1 with Bet 365. The 6-year-old gelding was well raced in 2010, picking up two wins along the way, and the strong stayer produced his most impressive performance to date when winning by seven furlongs from 6/4 favourite Polly's Mark in a Newmarket Listed race.
Meanwhile, the recent rain could play into the hands of Clive Cox's Poet, who has thrived on softer ground and will only run if there is some cut in the ground. The 6-year-old was an impressive second to Workforce in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes and could have every chance from odds of 12/1.
Also at 12/1 is Roger Varian's Laaheb, who is a seven time winner with pilot Richard Hills, although the pair need to improve on a fifth place at Newmarket last time out. Harris Tweed and King's Gambit complete the field for a race where Await The Dawn could confirm his potential.
10/11 Await The Dawn
8/1 Drunken Sailor
10/1 Campanologist
10/1 Calvados Blues
12/1 Laaheb
12/1 Passion For Gold
12/1 Poet
14/1 Harris Tweed
16/1 King's Gambit
