Godolphin's Delegator edges favouritism at 4/1 for Saturday's Ascot feature race, the Golden Jubilee Stakes, but with softer ground expected, Star Witness could take the spoils for Danny O'Brien. Ladbrokes make the Australian colt 5/1 second favourite, while 2008 winner Kingsgate Native could have decent each way claims for the six furlong sprint.
Godolphin trainer Saeed Bin Suroor had claimed that Delegator was his leading hope of a winner prior to the Royal Ascot meeting but the recent rain has dampened expectations. The 5-year-old is only likely to run if the ground is suitable, with a decision on his participation to be made on Saturday morning - but if the ground is decent then Godolphin definitely have the leading contender.
Second to Sea The Stars in the 2000 Guineas two years ago, Delegator has since returned to sprint distances and it has paid dividends. The colt was an impressive winner of the Group Two Duke of York Stakes on his first time over six furlongs at the recent York Meeting and he is set to be paired with Derby winning jockey Mikael Barzalona - who has six wins from fourteen for Godolphin this year.
There are no doubts Delegator is a classy performer but Star Witness could well become the fifth Australian winner of the Golden Jubilee in the last nine years. The 4-year-old colt is a Group One winner 'Down Under' and could enjoy the testing conditions this weekend. He has already raced at Ascot this week when rallying and staying impressively to finish second in the King's Stand over five furlongs on Tuesday. The step back up to six furlongs should suit and he could have the beating of Delegator.
The in-form Roger Charlton enters 7/1 chance Bated Breath, who is a vastly improving sort after winning on his last two outings and he faces a step up in class this weekend.
The only Irish contender comes from Charles O'Brien's Bewitched, who can be backed at odds of 7/1 with Ladbrokes.com. The 4-year-old filly shouldn't be out of place when stepping up in class on Saturday after winning her last three in a row. She was hugely impressive in 2010, winning five times over six furlongs, including two Group Threes, and she is set to be paired with Johnny Murtagh, who has won four of the last eleven Golden Jubilee Stakes.
Elsewhere, three year olds have a decent record in the race and Elzaam looks the best of those this weekend, particularly as the 10/1 chance makes a return to Ascot after losing out by a nose to Strong Suit in last year's Coventry Stakes. The colt was a comfortable six length winner at Newbury last time out, although trainer Roger Varian has doubts over his ability on softer ground.
Andrew Balding's Dalghar was second over the same course and distance in 2010 and the strong traveller should be all the better for a run out at York when sixth to Delegator last month.
2009 winner, Kingsgate Native, is a very tempting each way punt at 16/1 with Ladbrokes after impressing two years ago with John Best. The 6-year-old is now with Sir Michael Stoute's stables and was sixth in Tuesday's King Stand, although it looks a big ask to topple Star Witness and Delegator on Saturday.
