Foxhunters Chase Betting: A Baby Run Win will be Just Amazing

Double Silk was the last horse to win back to back in the Foxhunter Chase a feat he achieved in 1993 and 1994 and this year the Nigel Twiston-Davies trained Baby Run will be looking to emulate him and is the favourite in the betting to do so with odds of 3/1 available via Paddy Power.

Unlike last year Baby Run will be ridden by the trainer’s second son Willie Twiston-Davies who at 16 years old will be the youngest jockey in this amateur riders race. Willie of course will be looking to follow elder brother Sam into the winner’s enclosure and who rode the 11 year old to victory 12 months ago. It would be somewhat of a fairytale if he should succeed but on his form this season, with two Hunter Chase wins under his belt Baby Run clearly looks the one to beat.

His biggest danger looks to come from the Enda Bolger trained, JP McManus owned, On The Fringe, who also has two Hunter Chase victories this season in Ireland, his latest being at Leopardstown last month which he won in great style by eight lengths from the very useful Rudi Trucker. Certainly On The Fringe looks a great hunter chaser in the making, however only one six year old has won this race since 1989 which came in 2003 when Kingscliff won for the Alner family. Bookmakers nonetheless have reported plenty of support for him and his odds have been trimmed to 4/1 in the betting; the experienced JT McNamara gets the ride.

This race of course follows the Cheltenham Gold Cup and is run over the same course and distance. Eighteen of its last twenty winners were aged ten years old or under, moreover twenty of the last twenty five had won last time out. These are key trends and could be the reason why Baby Run might not have things all his own way. One horse who does tick all the right boxes is the Alan Hill trained 9 year old, Dantes Storm, who hacked up last month in the R.E. Sassoon Memorial Hunter Chase at Folkestone by 38 lengths. Although this win came on soft ground, he has won on firmer in Point to Point races but this latest win at least proved that he is top form which is why the 8/1 on offer in the betting from paddypower looks a great price.

Just Amazing from the Paul Nicholls stable is another who fits the bill, with two Hunter Chase wins last month. This eight year old has won twice over fences at Cheltenham before and will be representing a stable which have had two wins in this race in the past. Their first win came in 2004 with that old warhorse, Earthmover, who won aged 13 having already won the race once six years previously. The stable also won a year later in 2005 with Sleeping Night and believe that Just Amazing has more than a winning chance to become their third Foxhunter Chase winner this time around. He is currently around the 11/1 in the antepost betting market.

Gone To Lunch second in the Scottish Grand National last year and fifth in 2009 is another who has a lively chance provided the ground does not get any firmer. He has warmed up with two wins in Point to Points, but this is his first race under rules since the Scottish National last April. He is being backed however report Bookmakers and is currently around the 12/1 mark in the betting.

Another worthy of serious consideration is the mare, Sericina, who won the Dunraven Foxhunters Chase at Ffos Las last month after winning a string of Point to Pointers throughout her winter campaign. She fell in this race 12 months ago when travelling exceptionally well and will be in with a big chance should she complete a clear round. She is currently a 16/1 shot in the betting.
