This could be one of the most competitive races of the whole Festival, it is certainly one of the most eagerly anticipated and one that should produce a worthy winner. Although only the sixth running this Grade 1 run over 2m 5 furlongs is a race aimed at a champion horse who does not quite get the Gold Cup distance and who is not quick enough for a two mile chase.
Favourite is the Paul Nicholls trained, Poquelin, who has been very impressive this season so far. He won the Grade 3, Boylesports Gold Cup, over course and distance in December, where he had subsequent Racing Post Chase winner, Razor Royale, 7 lengths back in second. He has been kept fresh for this race which has always been his seasonal target. At 4/1 with Ladbrokes he could be a good thing for favourite backers.
Disputing favouritism is the Edward O’Grady trained, Tranquil Sea, who is a best price of 9/2 and has a win over Poquelin this season when he won the Paddy Power Gold Cup back in November. He warmed up for this race with a cosy win in the Grade 2, Newlands Chase at Leopardstown last month, where he had a top quality well beaten and in which he looked every bit the champion.

Against the top two in the market is HM The Queen’s horse, Barbers Shop, who has been tipped up by several leading plaudits as the likely winner of this race. Trained by Nicky Henderson, Barbers Shop was last seen in The King George Chase when finishing a third, but a distance behind the great Kauto Star and before that he was a well beaten 4th, when getting a lump of weight from Denman in the Hennessy Gold Cup in November. Despite the recent form he is still priced at 5/1 with Ladbrokes, which we think is poor value for a horse who has a lot to find with some of the runners in this race.
One who we do think is great value however, is the Evan Williams trained, Deep Purple, a winner of two straight Grade 2 races at the beginning of the season, the Charlie Hall and the Peterborough Chases, Deep Purple then took on Kauto Star in the King George, but after running well to begin with ended up pulling up and has been off course since. We think fully refreshed, with the ground drying up nicely and with outstanding odds of 25/1 with Ladbrokes he offers excellent each way value in this race.
