Classy Blaklion The One To Beat In Competitive Grand National Trial

Saturday 18th February 2017, 3.15pm - Grand National Trial (Haydock Park)

The big races are coming thick and fast at the moment and there is a cracking card at Haydock Park this weekend. The Grand National Trial has grown into an important race over the past few years, and we have a strong field engaged this weekend for one of the key races on the road to Aintree.

  • Paul Nicholls has trained the Grand National Trial winner once in his career - Shotgun Willy in 2003
  • The last two winners of the race have carried 11st 6lbs and 11st 7lbs

Blaklion Looks The Class of The Field

The field for the Grand National Trial is looking as competitive as ever but Blaklion is the classy animal at the top of the weights, who might well just be the one to beat. The Nigel Twiston-Davies trained 8YO was good enough to win the RSA Chase last season, and connections clearly have one eye on sending him to Aintree in April.

He might only be a little horse but Blaklion is a solid jumper of a fence, and the suggestion is that he is crying out for a trip. He ran a really good race when 5th i the Hennessy Gold Cup last November when travelling like the winner of much of contest, whilst his 3rd pace in the Rowland Meyrick was also a respectable run.

Running off a mark 2lbs higher than the won the RSA Chase off, Blaklion is the one to beat here at 9/2 with Ladbrokes, and he is sure to run well in conditions that will suit.

Who Can Challenge The Favourite?

Punters looking for a bigger priced alternative have a few options with the consistent Kruzhlinin (7/1) perhaps the main threat.

The Philip Hobbs horse was last seen running well at Kempton and he is another one that should be suited by the extended trip this weekend. He showed that day he can compete off of 146 and with the same rating going into this race, it would be a surprise if he was out of the frame.

Vieux Lion Rouge was last seen finishing like a train to win the Becher Chase at Aintree for David Pipe and this will be his final run before he goes to the Grand National. He has been off since that win at the start of December so may need the run but he should still run well at 7/1 with Sky Bet.

Kerry Lee won this contest last year with Bishops Road and she will be hoping for a similar success with Goodtoknow (9/1). He ran a massive race when 2nd in the Classic Chase at Hereford, before winning at Hereford last time out, and he is one that is going the right way. An interesting contender but he might want more juice in the ground to be seen to best impact.

Conclusion

Kruzhlinin will run his race at the weekend but Vicente is one that sticks out as over-priced. Running off a mark of just 1lb higher than his Scottish National win last year, Vicente will have his good to soft conditions this weekend and the extra trip is sure to help a horse who gallops all day. His performances this season have been solid, and we can expect him to be in the mix for a play at an each-way price of 20/1 with Paddy Power.
