The 2010 Champion Hurdle winner Binocular has edged ahead of Hurricane Fly in the ante-post betting for the 2011 Cheltenham renewal. Binocular's win in Saturday's rearranged Christmas Hurdle at Kempton saw his odds clipped in from 5/1 to 11/4 with Bet365 bookmakers and became outright favourite in the process, whilst Hurricane Fly drifted slightly from 4/1 to 9/2.
Nicky Henderson's Binocular is the reigning champion and has been wrestling with Hurricane Fly for outright favouritism, a battle that is likely to continue right up to and throughout the race on Tuesday 15th March. Binocular was hugely impressive at Cheltenham last year and gave further notice of his abilities with a strong travelling performance in winning the Christmas Hurdle at the weekend. The 7-year-old jumped smoothly and was a stylish mover as he justified his 13/8 ante-post favouritism to defeat Overturn by 3 and 3/4 lengths, and erased memories of his defeat in the same race last year. It was an excellent day for Nicky Henderson as he claimed a one-two in the King George VI Chase, and is expected to give Binocular another outing before March at the Contenders Hurdle at Sandown in February - a race he won last year.
Saturday's runner up Overturn set the pace for much of Saturday's race and has been clipped in to 20/1 for the Champion Hurdle by Bet365.com after starting the race at 25/1. While third placed Starluck has been entered at an industry best priced 50/1 with Bet 365, and the top three finish was a fine follow up to his second place at the Fighting Fifth in November.
There was disappointment on Saturday though for Khyber Kim who could only finish fourth, a full 13 lengths back from Binocular. As a result the 9-year-old has drifted out to 25/1 from 14/1 with Bet365 bookmakers and it will be interesting to see how he gets on in his next outing which is expected to be in the Welsh Champion Hurdle in February. If he does race at Ffos Las he could face another who has Champion Hurdle aspirations in the form of Oscar Whisky.
Meanwhile, as a result of Binocular's win at the weekend, leading contender Menorah drifted slightly in the Champion Hurdle ante-post betting. International Hurdle winner Menorah has gone out to an industry best priced bet of 5/1 from 9/2, while Fighting Fifth winner Peddlers Cross is also industry best priced at 6/1. It is a sign of the strength in depth that could be in store for the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival that Peddlers Cross beat Binocular into third in the Fighting Fifth and it promises to be a hugely competitive race.
