Jockey Ruby Walsh gave punters probably one of the best tips available yesterday regarding Prospect Wells chances in this Saturday’s Valuable Ladbroke Hurdle over two miles at Ascot. The ace pilot believes that the six year old is on an excellent weight, particularly for a novice and that he is a horse that he seriously fancies his chances on.
His comments were enough for Ladbrokes to clip him a half point in the market from 7/2 to 3/1 making him the clear favourite to give trainer, Paul Nicholls and for that matter Walsh a first success in the race.
Since his move from the now defunct Howard Johnson stable to Ditcheat, Prospect Wells has enjoyed two wins in three starts and put up a great show when second to current Supreme Novices Hurdle favourite, Steps To Freedom in the Grade 2 Sharp Novices Hurdle at Cheltenham last month. His performances have earned him antepost favouritism for the County hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March.
Tips have also been seen for the Nicky Henderson trained Gibb River, who was fancied to do well in last season’s Supreme Novices after chalking up a three timer, however he ran disappointingly finishing down the field. The five year old was a narrowly beaten into third place on his reappearance this season in a Listed race at Sandown Park and should improve hugely for the run. He can be backed currently with the sponsors with odds of 8/1. Henderson has saddled the winner of this race three times in the last eight renewals.
Irish raider Sailors Warn is another who has been the subject of a few tips, especially from Irish pundits, who rate him very highly. He ran with great credit when just over a length adrift of Steps To Freedom in a specialist 4YO Grade 3 Hurdle at Punchestown in October. He has since ran second again behind the very highly rated Unaccompanied in the Listed Fishery Lane Hurdle over 2m at Naas last month. He will enjoy the soft ground at Newbury on Saturday and has to be in with a huge chance. He has generous odds of 10/1 to win.
The Ladbroke Hurdle which is one of two features on the Newbury Card on Saturday has not been a great race for favourites, with only one winning in the last eight renewals. That said it has been cancelled for the past two years due to adverse weather conditions, so punters are advised not to read too much into that statistic.
Brampour, who ran gamely only last Saturday in the Grade 2 International Hurdle when third behind the brilliant Grandouet and the hugely improved Overturn, will be looking to repeat his Grade 2 Greatwood Handicap Hurdle success at Cheltenham last month. He will have the burden of top weight against him this week which will do him no favours, but he is a youngster with plenty of class and one which trainer, Paul Nicholls believes can get into the frame. He has been the subject of a number of each way tips this past few days and could be well worth backing on that basis with odds of 10/1 also available from ladbrokes.
Others on the card who have been the subject of one or two tips are Abergavenny from the Brian Ellison stable who appears to be well handicapped based on his last run when third behind Brampour in the ‘Greatwood’. He also has odds of 10/1, as does the Alan King trained Raya Star who comes to the race with the stable showing consistently good form.
With odds of 16/1 is the Dr Richard Newland trained Act Of Kalanisi, who has been backed in from 25/1 into 16/1 in the last few days, clearly indicating that he is a horse from a stable renowned for big race wins. He is obviously respected by the Bookmakers and he appears to have been trained specifically for the race. He would be one of our tips for each way backers!
Finally, it s worth taking note of the Donald McCain entry, Desert Cry who acquitted himself well in a couple of Grade 2 Novice Hurdle races last season. He confirmed his progress on his seasonal debut last month in a decent looking handicap hurdle at Haydock where he carried top weight to victory. At 14/1 he also appears to have good credentials to win or at least be placed in the race, particularly as McCain believes that there is much more improvement to come from him. He could be the one under the radar and although has gone up 8lb since his Haydock he is the best value of our tips to win this.
