Bookmaker Totesport Increase Cheltenham Gold Cup Prize Money

There was good news of the 2011 Cheltenham Festival this week when the racecourse announced that two of the meeting's biggest sponsored had increased the prize money for two of the top races. Totesport have upped the prize for the Gold Cup to a cool half a million pounds, making it the richest run jumps race outside of the Grand National, whilst Ryanair have increased the prize for the Ryanair Chase to £260,000. This means that the prize money for the 2011 Cheltenham Festival will be £3.4m working out at a fantastic £125,000 per race.

All roads lead to Cheltenham at this stage of the season and this week has been no different. The long awaited Fairyhouse meeting was eventually run on Wednesday at the fifth time of asking and there were market moves for some of the big winners in Cheltenham's ante-post betting. Zaidpour looks as though he'll be a contender for the Supreme Novices' Hurdle winning the Royal Bond with ease, whilst Mikael D'Haguenet was also shortended for the RSA Chase, despite falling at the last in the Drinmore Novice Chase.

Elsewhere, the Champion Hurdle betting heated up as Hurricane Fly was backed in to co favourtism following his fine win in the Hatton's Grace Hurdle, whilst Tranquil Sea looks like going straight to Cheltenham following his win in the John Durkan Memorial Chase, with £260k on offer in the Ryanair Chase, where he is a 6/1 chance with Paddy Power.

The Cheltenham Gold Cup betting features past winners Imperial Commander, Kauto Star and Denman at the head of proceedings, whilst Hennessy Gold Cup winner Diamond Harry has also been backed. Kauto Star will be running in the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day, in a bid for a record five wins in a row in the race.The 2011 Cheltenham Festival is run from the 15th to 18th of March.
