Friday's King Edward VII Stakes boasts a hugely competitive field for a race that is commonly known as the 'Ascot Derby'. Sir Henry Cecil's World Domination has plenty to prove at Ascot after swerving the Epsom Derby, while Nathaniel is ante-post favourite at odds of 11/4 with Boylesports, although we fancy Glen's Diamond could be the value pick for the Group Two race.
John Gosden's Nathaniel can prove his credentials as a leading St Leger contender with a good performance in Friday's 1 mile, 4 furlong outing. The 3-year-old colt was a two time runner up as a juvenile, including a half length defeat to Frankel at Newmarket last August, and he built on that promise at the Chester May meeting. The Galileo colt was second to Treasure Beach in the Chester Vase, and that performance looks all the better when you look at the winner's performance in the Derby.
World Domination has plenty to do after flopping in the Dante Stakes at York where he was fourth to Carlton House and swerved the Derby as a result. The Empire Maker colt is a hot prospect though, even if he has to redeem his reputation, and it is worth remembering that the 4/1 punt was a sensational Newbury maiden stakes winner on debut.
Sir Henry Cecil's other entry, Glencadam Gold, looks an improving sort and is one of only two horses, along with Nathaniel, to have won over the King Edward distance - at odds of 20/1 with Boyles he could be worth keeping an eye on.
The pick of the field for us though is Richard Fahey's Glen's Diamond at 8/1, and Fahey built the 3-year-old up as his best chance of a Royal Ascot winner before the meeting. Fahey only added Glen's Diamond to the field at the six day stage, and he is on a four race unbeaten run, with his only defeat coming on debut as a juvenile.
There appears to be plenty to come from this gelding and his most eye-catching performance to date was his impressive Dee Stakes win at the Chester May meeting, with the extra two furlongs at Royal Ascot this week looking ideal.
Meanwhile, Roger Varian has opted to swerve Mijhaar (7/1) from the Tercentenary Stakes in favour of the King Edward VII. It looks to be a shrewd move for a colt that should stay and who arrives on the back of a seven length maiden stakes win at Haydock - a win made all the more impressive by the runner up and third that day both winning their next races by five lengths.
Another comfortable maiden winner was Sir Michael Stoute's Fiorente (9/1) at Newbury last month and the Monsun colt was fifth to World Domination on debut at Newbury in April.
The vastly improving Alexander Hope is an interesting entry for Aidan O'Brien at 14/1 with Boylesports.com. The Irish colt showed great staying ability in giving O'Brien a sixth consecutive win in the Airlie Stud Gallinule Stakes at the Curragh and should enjoy the extra step up this week.
Glen's Diamond looks well capable of beating the rest, although an almighty battle with World Domination and Nathaniel could be in store.
11/4 Nathaniel
4/1 World Domination
7/1 Mijhaar
8/1 Glen's Diamond
9/1 Fiorente
10/1 Genius Beast
14/1 Alexander Pope
16/1 Hurricane Higgins
20/1 Fulgur
20/1 Glencadam Gold
25/1 Dordogne
