Brando to storm to Duke Of York Stakes victory on day one of Dante festival
Wednesday 17th May, 2017 - 3:30pm York - Duke Of York Stakes
A cracking three-day Dante festival kicks off at York on Wednesday and one of the highlights on the opening day is the Grade 2 Duke Of York Stakes, which will see the sprinters take centre stage, and as per usual this 6f dash has attracted some of the leading speedsters in the country.
- Magical Memory won this race in 2016
- The Tin Man has a Group 1 penalty to carry
- Brando won the Abernant Stakes impressively last month

Progressive Brando Heads The Betting
Kevin Ryan's Brando has launched into the higher echelons of the sprint division over the last couple of seasons and the former Ayr Gold Cup winner kicked off his campaign with an impressive victory in the Group 3 Abernant Stakes at Newmarket last month, and he is fancied to build on that effort with victory here, and he is currently the 100/30 favourite with Coral for this contest.
He picked up impressively off a fierce gallop in that Abernant victory, and he certainly looks a lot classier at six furlongs, and with the rain hitting the Knavesmire in recent days then this will need a horse that has a lot of stamina, so you have to feel that he certainly sets the standard here.
He has the capabilities of making into a top grade sprinter this season, and if Tom Eaves can hold him off the pace in this event, and the unleash his speed in the closing stages then he could well bound to victory and record yet another notable Pattern success before he heads to the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot next month.
Memory Aims To Retain Crown, As Tin Man Aims To Defy Penalty
Magical Memory was a fine winner of this race 12 months ago, and the Charlie Hills-trained raider is available at 5/1 with bet365 for this event, but following on from his win in this contest last season he went off the boil with some low-key performances in some of the elite sprints, so while he has the ability to play a prominent role he could be best watched on his seasonal reappearance.
James Fanshawe's The Tin Man ended last season with a fine Group 1 win in the Champion Sprint Stakes on British Champions Day, but the 6/1 shot with Paddy Power will have to carry a penalty for that win, so that may just prove too much to deal with in this event, and may have to play a minor role here.
Best Of The Rest
Tupi was a winner of Doncaster's Cammidge Trophy last month, and he could well be the solid each-way play at 14/1 with Betfred, but he had previously been beaten by Jungle Cat, and the latter could frank that form here and is a 10/1 shot with Paddy Power for victory in this event.
Of the others, Suedois (8/1) was placed in a plethora of Group 1 races last season, but often finds one or two too good in these top sprints, while Growl (12/1) and Tasleet (16/1) add tremendous depth to what is a thrilling renewal of this six-furlong crackerjack on day one of a star-studded Flat meeting.
