The William Hill Trophy Chase, often regarded as a trial for the Grand National looks like it could be a two horse race if the betting, of course, is anything to go by. Favourite is the David Pipe trained, The Package, winner over course and distance last December when taking the Neptune Investment Management Chase.
He will come into the race very fresh and according to connections he has been training extremely well at home. He is currently a strong 6/1 second favourite across the board, including with Ladbrokes Bookmakers, while favourite in the betting is Bensalem, owned and trained by Alan King, who saddled Fork Lightening to victory in this race in 2004. Bensalem ran a creditable second in a three horse race, to RSA Chase candidate, Diamond Harry last time out, but showed in that race that there are flaws in his jumping and he looked vulnerable. With him being in a big competitive field here he might well find this race too daunting. Bensalem is currently 5/1 with Ladbrokes

This is not a great race for favourites, with only Wichita Lineman last year and Antonin in 1994, winning in the last 15 years, but with so few in the field this year that are serious challengers to The Package and Bensalem that this could be a race that favourite backers should get on.
David Pipe knows what type of horse wins this race and his stable have been hitting plenty of races like this throughout the season. It would not surprise us to see a market move for The Package on the day so we would advise punters to get on early.
We certainly think The Package will win the race with horses such as Niche Market and Character Building good each way opportunities at good prices.
