The Arkle Trophy named in honour of the great three time Gold Cup winner of the sixties, is one of several races at the Festival this year that can be said to be very open, with a number of good quality novice chasers in with a shout of glory.
Leading the way in the betting is the Edward Harty trained, Captain Cee Bee, winner of the 2008 Supreme Novices Hurdle and who has now taken to novice chasing very successfully. He is currently quoted at 11/4 with Bet365 , with next best in the betting, Somersby at 4/1
Captain Cee Bee took a year out of racing after picking up an injury at Aintree in April, 2008, returning only in December where he impressively won a competitive Irish Stallions EBF novice chase at Naas. He fell next time out when looking likely to win the Grade One, Bard na Mona Novice Chase at Leopardstown, a race in which one of his main rivals in this, Sizing Europe held on to win. He has since bounced back and looked hugely impressive when hosing up in the Opera Hat Novice last month at Naas, winning that race in a canter 13 lengths clear of the second.

Sizing Europe and Somersby both have strong claims, indeed the two have come in for increasing support as the race looms large. Sizing Europe, one time favourite for the 2008 Champion Hurdle, is unbeaten over the bigger obstacles and has won at Grade 3, Grade 2 and most recently at Grade One level. He is currently 5/1 to win the race. Somersby, trained by Henrietta Knight on the other hand will come into the race fresh having not run since winning the Grade 2, Henry Vlll Novice Chase at Sandown in December.
Of the others Riverside Theatre looked an outstanding prospect when hosing up in the Grade 2, William Hill Novices Chase at Kempton over the Christmas period and may get into the frame in this. While Sports line, trained by Willie Mullins in Ireland has not been out of the first two in any of his races and is in great from at home.
This is a hard race to call, but for our money we are going to side with Somersby to win this. We think his superior jumping and the fact that he has been kept fresh will strongly assist his claims.
