Having been described by his trainer, Nicky Henderson as one of the two best chasers he has ever trained, Long Run, currently the 2/1 favourite with Paddy Power to win this race would normally be described as the banker of the meeting. However, Henderson’s other best chaser, Punchestowns is also in the field and on paper could and should be the biggest threat
It should be remembered that when trainers like Henderson, who holds the record of 35 Cheltenham Festival winners, after his victory in the Champion Hurdle yesterday, give out accolades such as he has over the ability of Long Run and Punchestowns, then surely even the most cynical of punters should take note.

It has to be said that French bred, Long Run looked supreme when winning his last two starts, he won the Grade 1 Feltham Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day by 12 lengths and followed that up with a 13 length victory in the Grade 2, Kingmaker Novice Chase at Warwick last month; this represents outstanding form and ability. He will be ridden by Sam Waley-Cohen.

Punchestowns meanwhile has taken to the bigger obstacles like a ‘duck does to water’ winning both his chase starts this season. He looked particularly impressive in his last run when he won the Grade 1, Totesport Challengers Novices Chase at Sandown by eight lengths. The 7 year old also enjoyed a successful hurdling career, where the highlight was his close second to Big Bucks in the 2009 World Hurdle at Cheltenham; he is backable for this race with odds of 3/1 from Paddy Power. Punchestowns will be ridden by stable jockey, Barry Geraghty.
Another contender worth mentioning is the Nick Williams trained, Diamond Harry, who is another who has successfully made the transition from hurdles to fences. He has won two novice chases so far, one at Grade 2 level and comes into the race at the top of his game and with odds of around the 6/1 mark
