2010 Grand National Runners and Weights

Antepost favourite, Tricky Trickster has been handed a reasonable weight of 11-4 to carry around the Aintree Grand National on 10th April. The Paul Nicholls trained youngster recently won the Grade Two Aon Chase at Newbury, proving that he not only stays but that he is a sound jumper with speed a plenty.

He will carry the same weight as Niche Market, who was a close up second place to Tricky Trickster in the Aon Chase, but who also won the 2009 Irish Grand National, proving to many that he is an ideal Aintree horse.Tricky Trickster, a seven year old, is as short as 10/1 for the race but he is still readily available at 12/1 with VC Bet while Niche Market is a best price of 16/1 with the same Bookmaker

Top weight for the race has been handed to three quality former Grade One winners, Albertas Run, trained by Jonjo O’Neill, Madison Du Berlais, trained by David Pipe and the Tom Dreaper trained, former Welsh National winner, Notre Pere. They will all carry 11-12 should they run.

Shock 2009 winner, Mon Mome will carry an extra half stone this year, going from 11-0 to 11-7, while 2008 winner, Comply Or Die has been handed a fighting weight of 11-5. Mon Mome became the first horse since Foinavon in 1967 to win the race with odds of 100/1, he will be nothing like that price this year - indeed he is currently being backed to repeat the feat at 25/1.

Fourth placed last year, State Of Play, trained by Evan Williams, is very well weighted for the 2010 renewal at 10-11, with 2008 Grand National runner up, Kings John Castle on 10-9.

The 2010 National looks likely to be a high quality affair at this stage, with many of the leading contenders having performed well either at Aintree in the past or in one of the other three major Nationals. Add to the mix that there are several Grade One and Two winners in the field the race becomes a highly exciting affair and potentially one of the best Grand Nationals ever.

Those who enjoy backing favourites should do so this year with more than a degree of caution. If current favourite Tricky Trickster should win, he will become the first 7 year old to do so since Bogskar achieved the feat way back in 1940.
