The Grade 1 John Durkan Memorial Chase is the surprise addition to Wednesday's fabulous card at Fairyhouse, where organisers moved the race from Punchestown on Tuesday to ensure it gets run during this difficult period for jumps racing. Punchestown's loss is definitely Fairyhouse's gain and this 1.55pm contest is one of four Grade 1 races at the track today. 2009 Paddy Power Gold Cup winner Tranquil Sea heads the betting for trainer Edward O'Grady. Irish bookmaker Paddy Power have priced the eight year old up at odds of 15/8 to get his second win of the season.
A 10/11 winner in a Grade 2 event at Clonmel on his seasonal debut, Tranquil Sea got back to winning ways following a disappointing end to last season. With wins in the Paddy Power and the Grade 2 Newlands Chase, the eight year old was well fancied to score at the Cheltenham Festival in the Ryanair Chase. A win didn't transpire though finishing a well beat ninth and he followed that up with an under par sixth in the Punchestown Guinness Gold Cup. His best form however has come early season, and looks to run well fresh so could be worth backing on Wednesday.
Next in the betting comes the 2009 RSA Chase winner Cooldine trained by Willie Mullins. PaddyPower go 3/1 about this talented staying chaser, who although having won over two and a half miles in the past, may find this trip a little sharp against the likes of the favourite. The eight year old hasn't actually won since his fine performance in the RSA and finished a well beaten fifth in last year's Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival. He beat Tranquil Sea finishing third in the Punchestown Guinness Gold Cup on his last appearance back in April and this would be some performance to score at Fairyhouse.
J'Y Vole is an interesting runner at odds of 7/1 in the betting. The 7/1 chance unseated jockey Davey Condon last time out, again in the Punchestown Guinness Gold Cup last April but ran well at a big price finishing third in last season's Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham. The mare gets five pounds weight allowance and could be a decent each-way bet at the prices.
Elsewhere in the betting, Roberto Goldback and Glencove Marina are both priced at 7/1, whilst Grand National runner Vic Venturi is given very short looking odds of 14/1. Mossbank was a serious middle distance chaser before injury and a disappointing reappearance at Down Royal in November, finishing 57 lengths behind winner Kauto Star means he's an 18/1 chance on Wednesday. Trafford Lad and Coolcashin make up the betting at 20/1 and 25/1 respectively.
15/8 Tranquil Sea
3/1 Cooldine
7/1 Glencove Marina
7/1 Roberto Goldback
7/1 Jy Vole
14/1 Vic Venturi
18/1 Mossbank
20/1 Trafford Lad
25/1 Coolcashin
