The Hattons Grace Hurdle promises to be quite a spectacle as part of a bumper card at Fairyhouse on Wednesday as two old rivals go head-to-head. The race has been postponed three times but finally gets underway at 12.50 and will see Solwhit take on Hurricane Fly for a third time. Solwhit has already had a run this season and edges the ante-post favouritism at 11/10 with Bet 365 while Hurricane Fly makes his seasonal debut and is 3/1.
Solwhit heads the 11 declarations in the betting for Wednesday's Hatton's Grace Hurdle and it is not surprising as the 6-year-old performed so well in winning on his seasonal debut at Punchestown in November. He has met Hurricane Fly over hurdles twice before and won in Punchestown during November last year before losing in a thriller at the same course in April, and if Wednesday's race is anything like that one it should make for a quite brilliant watch. The fact Solwhit has had a run this season should hand Charles Byrnes' horse the advantage on Wednesday with Hurricane Fly yet to run.
Hurricane Fly beat Solwhit at the Punchestown Festival in April by just a neck in a sensational race and a repeat of another close finish at Fairyhouse would be welcomed by most. However, this will be the 6-year-old's first race of the season and with the recent snow and cold weather the ground could be testing. Willie Mullins has admitted his lack of race fitness could be a concern and concedes Solwhit has the edge on Wednesday, while the 2 mile 4 furlong race at Fairyhouse is the first time that Hurricane Fly has raced over that distance since his early races in France. The pair appear to be the only genuine contenders to win on Wednesday and they are both likely to be seen in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham Festival in March. Hurricane Fly is well fancied at industry best priced odds of 7/1 with Bet365 for the Champion Hurdle, while Solwhit is further back at 16/1, but an impressive run at Fairyhouse could change that.
Elsewhere on Wednesday, the ever reliable Voler La Vedette is priced at 9/1 by bet365.com to cause an upset and beat the stand out pair of the race. Colm Murphy's 6-year-old came second to Solwhit by two and a half lengths at Punchestown last month, and while he is a useful horse he doesn't appear to possess the same exceptional star quality that Solwhit and Hurricane Fly have. Interestingly last year's Hatton's Grace winner Oscar Dan Dan comes in at odds of 14/1 for Wednesday's race with Bet365 bookmakers, and the 8-year-old has form at Fairyhouse. He won a Grade 2 hurdle back in April 2009 to go along with last year's impressive Hatton's Grace win. Also at 14/1 with Bet365 is Noel Meade's Donnas Palm, and the 6-year-old won his first two races of the season before finishing a disappointing third of four at Punchestown in November, four lengths back from winner Solwhit.
