Seven runners go to post in the 2010 Peterborough Chase, which has been moved to Newbury on Wednesday following Huntingdon's postponement. Favourite for the race is the two time Tingle Creek winner Twist Magic, who trainer Paul Nicholls decided to race here rather than up against stablemate Master Minded in Saturday's Tingle Creek at Cheltenham, the race itself had been moved from Sandown. The two time Tingle Creek winner is a tricky horse to bet on, reserving his very best form for Sandown. Add to that the fact that the two and a half miles at Newbury is a step up in trip for the eight-year-old, who clearly prefers to run right handed and there are enough question marks to leave this horse alone on Wednesday. Bookmaker Ladbrokes give the favourite odds of 7/4 to score on his Newbury debut.
Last year's winner Deep Purple is also amongst the runners and is well fancied. Trainer Evan Williams had high hopes for Deep Purple following his win in this race twelve months ago, winning a competitive Peterborough Chase, beating Tartak by six lengths into second and Albertas Run a further five lengths back in third. However, that was his last win on a racecourse having pulled up in the King George VI Chase over Christmas and finishing fourth in the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. The Peterborough Chase trip of two miles and four furlongs means that you'll get horses entered with the Ryaniar their taget for Cheltenham. Although not winning twelve months ago, Albertas Run went on to score at the festival. At 7/2, Deep Purple could very well be the pick of these.
Tom George's Tartak is another priced at 7/2 with Ladbrokes for today's race. The seven-year-old is a horse who seems to struggle to get that elusive win in races he runs well in. His last win came back in April 2009 where he beat Deep Purple by seven lengths in the Manifesto Novice Chase at Aintree. Deep Purple reversed the form in this race twelve months ago beating Tartak into second and ge was a beaten favourite in the Old Roan Chase on his seasonal debut, again at Aintree in October.
Breedsbreeze looks to have the best claims of those a bit bigger in the betting. The 8/1 chance trained by Paul Nicholls is owned by legendary owner Jim Lewis, who has wins in the race with Impek, Best Mate and Edredon Bleu. The eight year old fell on his last appearance at Ascot back in February 2009, before which he was a leading novice chaser. It would be a fine training effort by Paul Nicholls were he to get the win here following nearly two years on the sidelines, but might be worth a punt opposed to the favourite at the prices.
