Tips Order Of St George to win    Best Bet @ 11 / 10

George Could Be Order Of The Day In Gold Cup Feature

Order Of St George launched up the staying ranks last season as he continued to progress over the marathon distances, with his career highlight coming at the Curragh as he breezed to a mightily-impressive 11-length win in the Irish St Leger, and if he can repeat that effort then it's hard to see him being defeated and the 11/10 with Coral could be a decent bet for favourite backers.

He warmed up for this assignment with a facile four-and-a-half length success in Leopardstown's Listed Saval Beg Stakes a fortnight ago, and with his pedigree suggesting that the step up to 2m 4f unlikely to prove a problem then he could be the class act in the race, as he looks to emulate the likes of Yeats and Fame And Glory, who have both tasted success in this prestigious race.

He will face a tougher task than that aforementioned Saval Beg contest, but on paper he looks to have the potential to be the dominant performer in staying races over the next few seasons, and it's going to be extremely tough for his rivals to down this top notch son of Galileo, who can ease to glory.

Dour Stayers Aim To Down Ballydoyle Hotpot

Several trainers may have been ruing the wet weather that has hit Ascot over the last week or so, but Peter Niven would've been one handler enjoying the rain as his Clever Cookie has shown throughout his career that he relishes cut in the ground, and having seen the eight-year-old land the Yorkshire Cup last month he will fancy his chances of playing his part here, and is 10/1 with BetVictor.

However, he may not have enough class for Order Of St George, and it could be wise to veer towards the Willie Mullins-trained Max Dynamite, who showed when second in the Melbourne Cup that he is a top notch stayer, yet he disappointed when sent off a red-hot jolly for the Henry II Stakes at Sandown Park on his seasonal reappearance, so while he may come on for that run the 8/1 with bet365 is a little skinny.

Luca Cumani's Mizzou is potentially the biggest danger to the favourite as he impressed when downing Clever Cookie in the Sagaro Stakes earlier in the season, and while he struggled in this race last year he could well build on that Sagaro win, so if his stamina holds out then has to be the each-way play for punters at 12/1 with Betfred.

Officer Worth A Second Look, As Fun Mac Is Overpriced

John Gosden's Flying Officer ended last season with a fine win in the Long Distance Cup on British Champions Day, and a return to Ascot should see him at his best, and Sky Bet's 12/1 is interesting, but he was beaten by the abovementioned duo of Mizzou and Clever Cookie in the Sagaro Stakes, so will need to improve here to reverse that form around.

Pallasator won the Henry II Stakes last time out, and will be another that should have no problem with the rain-softened ground, but he can be sometimes lacklustre, so may struggle to follow up that recent win and is not an attractive bet at 12/1 with bet365 in what is a race that could be dominated by the favourite.

Perhaps a more speculative bigger priced runner is Fun Mac, who was just touched off by Clondaw Warrior in the Ascot Stakes at last year's Royal Ascot, and while he will need a huge performance to figure here on his seasonal reappearance he has the potential and at 33/1 with Betfair, who are paying four places each-way then he is a possible contender to outrun his lofty odds.
