Twelve runners are set to go to post in the Grade 1 RSA Chase on Wednesday afternoon at the 2011 Cheltenham Festival. The betting market is headed by long time ante-post favourite Time For Rupert, who hasn't been seen on the course since the beginning of December. Bookmaker Paddy Power are keen to take the favourite on, going odds of 11/4 best industry price about the Paul Webber trained seven-year-old. The long lay-off will be of concern to punters who study race trends, with the last 47 winners of this race having run in the same calendar year. Time For Rupert was set to race on Cheltenham trials day at the end of January but missed the race through illness. Connections say he's raring to go on Wednesday but like Cue Card in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle on Tuesday, it won't be a surprise to see his price pushed out on the morning of the race.
Time For Rupert has had just the two runs of fences this season, another negative trend with the last eleven winners all having raced at least three times over the timber. The seven year old's form does stack up however, impressive in winning at Cheltenham twice in the Autumn and also pushed Big Buck's all the way in last season's World Hurdle. It'll be a fantastic training effort for a small yard such as Paul Webber's if they can banish some of these trends with a win on Wednesday afternoon.
There's some really competitive prices in the chasing pack, especially with each-way betting in mind. Second favourite with Paddypower is the Paul Nicholls' trained Aiteen Thirtythree who is unbeaten this season, although is another horse who lacks chasing experience, with just the two runs over the big fences. His win in a novices' chase last time out at Newbury in February propelled the seven year old into the RSA reckoning, but there seem to be other horses with better claims in this lineup.
Jessies Dream and Mikael D'Haguenet head the Irish challenge and a significant one it is as well, with half of the twelve runners having travelled over from the Emerald Isle. Both horses are rated as 8/1 chances for this race, with Mikael D'Haguenet's hurdle form on this track keeping the bookmakers on his side. In fact, the Willie Mullins trained seven year old has struggled over the big fences this season following a long injury lay-off. He fell at the last when looking to have the race at his mercy first time out in the Grade 1 Drinmore Novice Chase at Fairyhouse in December, a race incidentally won by Jessies Dream. He then went on to finish a well beaten fifth over the shorter trip in the With Nature Novice Chase at Christmas before being beat again with relative ease by 14/1 chance on Wednesday Bostons Angel in the Fort Leney Novice Chase. Providing he can produce some of his top hurdling form he can play a big part, but with question marks over his jumping he's difficult to back at 8/1.
A couple of English trained horses who catch the eye at big prices include Wayward Prince and Wymott both at odds of 9/1. Wayward Prince is enjoying a fantastic season for trainer Ian Williams, unbeaten in over a year picking up three novice chase wins on the way and a valuable novice hurdle at last season's Aintree meeting. A Grade 2 winner of the Towton Novices' Chase last time out in February he looks like a lively each-way chance. Wymott trained by Donald McCain is also unbeaten this season, although racing in modest company he headed Wayward Prince over a year ago in a Grade 2 novice hurdle at Haydock.
Finally, The Giant Bolster is a horse who impressed on Cheltenham trials day, winning a handicap chase lumping top weight beating Vino Griego by two and a quarter lengths, a horse who subsequently placed in Tuesday's Centenary Novices' Handicap Chase. He was also travelling well behind Time For Rupert and the smart Hell's Bay at a race here in the Paddy Power meeting before falling a few out and was sixth in last season's Neptune Novices' Hurdle at massive odds of 200/1. He's an 18/1 chance on Wednesday and looks a very tidy each-way bet.
