Top Irish hurdler Mikael D'Haguenet makes his long awaited debut over fences on Wednesday as Fairyhouse hosts the Grade 1 Bar One Drinmore Novice Chase over two and a half miles. The Willie Mullins trained six year old spent the whole of last season on the sidelines with injury, after winning the 2009 Ballymore Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. The horse was unbeaten over hurdles in Great Britain and Ireland and is one of the ante-post betting favourites for the RSA Chase at the 2011 Cheltenham Festival. Irish bookmaker Boylesports has the talented hurdler at 7/1 for the season's goal next March and he is favourite to get his chasing career off to a winning start in Ireland on Wednesday.
Mikael D'Haguenet faces nine horses on his chasing debut and Boylesports have priced up the six year old as their 11/8 favourite to get off to a winning start. Last seen on a racetrack 594 days ago winning the Champion Novice Hurdle at the Punchestown Festival in 2009, a raft of support for the horse is sure to come in on the morning of the race. That Punchestown win was his sixth graded victory in a row as a hurdler and connections will be hoping for similar figures for his chasing career.
The Gordon Elliott trained Jessies Dream is the second favourite and possibly best placed to cause an upset on Wednesday. The seven year old got his season off to a winning start last month, winning the EBF Beginners Chase at Galway. Timmy Murphy will be in the saddle for the horse owned by David Johnson, who was rated 140 as a hurdler, after finishing seventh in the Grade 1 Ladbrokes.com World Series Hurdle at the Punchestown Festival last Spring. At 7/2 with Boyle Sports he is the clear second favourite.
The a few horses who look to have decent each-way claims, none more so than 6/1 chance Realt Dubh, a best industry price with Boyles. This will be the fourth run over fences for the Noel Meade trained six year old, who bounced back from an October fall by winning the Grade 2 Craddockstown Novice Chase at Punchestown last time out. Add to that a useful win at Navan in the novice's debut over the big obstacles back in September he might just have the experience to exploit a potentially rusty Mikael D'Haguenet.
Further down the betting, 7/1 chance Head Of The Posse is owner JP McNamara's entry in the race and unbeaten over fences. A fourteen length victory in a beginners chase at Navan was followed up by a good win in the Grade 2 Barna Waste Ballybrit Novice Chase at Galway last month. Bostons Angel (10/1), Bob Lingo (12/1) and Berties Dream (16/1) are next in the betting and not without chances, whilst Quito De La Roque, Lucky William and Gold Cygnet make up the field and look easy to oppose at the prices.
11/8 Mikael D'Haguenet
7/2 Jessies Dream
6/1 Realt Dubh
7/1 Head Of The Posse
10/1 Bostons Angel
12/1 Bob Lingo
16/1 Berties Dream
20/1 Quito De La Roque
25/1 Lucky William
