Queen Mary Stakes Odds: Shumoos all the rage for fillies contest

Shumoos propelled herself to Queen Mary Stakes favouritism when looking mightily impressive in a Haydock maiden in late May. Brian Meehan's filly was held up early on but when Shane Kelly urged her forward she showed a blistering turn of foot to win by four-and-a-half lengths. Since then she has been all the rage with punters and she is as short as 13/8 favourite with Paddy Power for the Group Two fillies' contest on Wednesday.

Although the American-bred juvenile sets an extremely high benchmark for this contest the 13/8 looks to be ludicrously short about a filly who has only been seen once on the racecourse and there has to be better value elsewhere.

The chasm in the betting between the favourite and second best Fire Lily, who is 8/1 with PaddyPower.com is astonishing and David Wachman's runner has a lot stronger form going into the race. After winning a Navan maiden comfortably the daughter of Dansili then finished four lengths behind the impressive Power, who will be going for glory in the Coventry Stakes. If Aidan O'Brien's Power performs admirably in the Coventry and bolsters her reputation with a good run then Fire Lily's 8/1 will surely contract before the off.

Wesley Ward won this event in 2009 and the American trainer will send Gypsy Robin over from the States and she is 9/1 third best with Paddy Power. A winner at Keeneland this Daaher filly definitely has the connections to perform well at Royal Ascot and is worth noting.

Kevin Ryan's Dozy (9/1) was a decent winner of a Conditions Stakes at Beverley last month, but this will be a huge step up and could struggle.

The partnership of Richard Hannon and Richard Hughes can never be written off, especially with two-year-olds and the duo team up for Best Terms, who at 12/1 could be over-priced. Two out of two already the Exceed and Excel filly won at a canter at short odds last time out and even though this hustle and bustle will be far more taxing, could be the making of her and she could mark a bit of each way value.

However, the one that stands out in the betting is the Richard Fahey-trained Ebony Clarets, who at 16/1 is the one to be with. Only seen once on the racecourse, the daughter of Kyllachy beat none other than Pyman's Theory, who has since been seen breezing to victory in the Listed Piper Heidsieck Champagne National Stakes at Sandown Park. If Fahey can improve her for that Pontefract victory, she has to be in the mix-up at the end and is the eye-catching contender down the list to take on the hot favourite Shumoos, who is too short at 13/8.
