Canford Cliffs Heads Market in St James Palace Stakes Odds

The Richard Hannon trained Canford Cliffs heads the betting market for this outstanding Group One, St James Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, with odds of 7/4 available from Bet365 while his Newmarket 2000 Guineas conqueror, Mafki is only 11/4 with the same Bookmaker.

Although only nine go to post, the race looks every bit as exciting as the Queen Anne Stakes, with the leading 2000 Guineas rivals set to battle it out once again. It is great to see, French trainer, Mikel Delzangles bring the unbeaten Mafki back over the channel where they will be looking to confirm superiority over Canford Cliffs as well as the second Richard Hannon horse, Dick Turpin.

Since Newmarket, Canford Cliffs went on to make amends for his defeat by Mafki, by winning the Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh in emphatic style. He clearly came on for his Newmarket effort, but his victory was no surprise to Hannon, who has never lost faith in the horse since he won the Coventry Stakes at this meeting last year.

Hannon has even suggested that he is better than his stable companion, Dick Turpin, who has beaten him twice already this season, firstly in the Greenham Stakes at Newbury and then in the Newmarket Guineas, where Dick Turpin came second and Canford Cliffs third behind Mafki. Dick Turpin has since finished second again, this time in the French 2000 Guineas behind Lope De Vega, but remains solid in the market however where punters can back him currently at 8/1 with bet365 which we think are great odds for a horse who has done no wrong so far as a three year old.

The much hyped Aidan O’Brien trained, Steinbeck looks set to try and justify the claims made about him at Ballydoyle, where he is regarded as one of the stable stars in waiting. He could only manage fifth behind Canford Cliffs in the Irish 2000 Guineas, but like many of O’Brien horses, big improvement is likely to be made on his second run. It is why we would put no-one off if they took the 11/2 about him, but we retain plenty of misgivings about this three year old.

For our money however, we are going to go with the majority and lump on Canford Cliffs, his performance looked supreme at the Curragh, which, if he can reproduce, he is surely the one to be with.
