Denman Drifts in Cheltenham Gold Cup Betting

The jury will remain divided on where the blame should lie after 1/7 odds on favourite Denman came a cropper in the Aon Chase under the handling of champion jockey, Tony McCoy. As far as can be ascertained, the debate is around the 50/50 mark, which is all and well and good, but it also avoids the crucial issue on whether or not Denman still has a chance to regain his Cheltenham Gold Cup crown in just over a month’s time.

Bookmakers were quick to push Denman out in the betting where most have him at around the 3/1 mark, although he can be backed more favourably with Ladbrokes at 7/2. At the same time, Kauto Star has gone from around the 5/4 mark to around 4/6 odds on to win the crown for the third time in four years.

Cheltenham Gold Cup Betting and Form.

One bad race does not necessarily rule out the chances of a win next time out and punters will do well to remember also that Kauto Star has not always been foot perfect, particularly when under pressure. The Ruby Walsh decision however, to ride Kauto Star in the Gold Cup appears completely vindicated now and that decision alone should be enough to tell punters what horse to back for the race.

It has to be said that both horses looked absolutely fantastic when winning their respective last time out, Denman in the Hennessy Gold Cup and Kauto Star in the King George Chase. Those victories effectively put the two horses miles ahead of the rest, but while Kauto will come to Cheltenham without complications, Denman on the other hand will need to satisfy Paul Nicholls and his Ditcheat team that he has fully recovered and that before any decision is taken about whether or not McCoy will get the ride.

Ironically the winner of the Aon Chase was another Nicholls star, Tricky Trickster, who was superbly ridden by Ruby Walsh and who sneaked past 2009 Irish Grand National winner, Niche Market as they approached the line. For many racegoers Walsh winning the race after having to lose the Denman ride to McCoy would have been like ‘rubbing salt in McCoy’s wounds’ as well as ‘kicking him when he was down’.
