Richard Hannon appears to have a major stranglehold over this year’s Lockinge Stakes as he sends the classy duo of Dick Turpin and Canford Cliffs to Newbury. The latter had a pure brilliance about him when bagging a trio of Group One contests, including the Irish 2000 Guineas, St James’s Palace Stakes and the Sussex Stakes last year. Now on a rating of 127 he has to be one of the smartest performers in training and it is no surprise that he is clear 4/5 favourite with Paddy Power.
Dick Turpin made an eye-catching reappearance in the Bet365 Mile at Sandown when drawing two-and-a-quarter lengths clear of Cityscape, who he takes on again on Saturday. He is obviously the second string for Hannon with stable jockey Richard Hughes electing the aforementioned Canford Cliffs. However, Ryan Moore will take the ride and with fitness already on his side is bound to be a major contender and the 7/2 with Paddy Power is fairly generous. Nevertheless, he did finish behind Canford Cliffs at Royal Ascot and it would be a surprise if he can change the placings in this hot race, but should make the frame.
Twice Over is the most interesting contender in the whole field and Henry Cecil’s Group One winner could be over-priced at 8/1. He was unable to get near the front from a poor draw in the Dubai World Cup and finished in mid-division. However, over the straight mile Tom Queally will have no problem manufacturing a position for the six-year-old. Interestingly, Twice Over has not been seen at this distance since he finished third in this race two years ago, but he is a very classy animal and the 8/1 offered by PaddyPower is monstrous and he is worth at least an each way punt.
Cityscape (10/1) was well held by Dick Turpin at Sandown last time out, but he is sure to come on for that first outing and has to be watched. However, he has never managed to land a blow in this sort of company before and will struggle to live with the front three in the market.
Premio Loco has been a real progressive animal over the last three years, working his way up through handicaps to winning a Group Two at Ascot. At 20/1 though he offers very little value as he was beaten by Cityscape in the Nayef Joel Stakes at Newmarket at the back end of last year and didn’t shine in the Godolphin Mile at Meydan in March.
At 16/1 Red Jazz could be of some interest as he seems to still be on an upward curve for Barry Hills. An impressive winner of the Challenge Stakes at Newmarket, he then beat Premio Loco in that Godolphin Mile and at four he could quite easily still be improving and is the one at a double-figured price to watch out for.
On the face of it, it appears this should boil down to the front three in the market and if Canford Cliffs turns up should take all the beating, however, the 8/1 is too big about Twice Over, who is a proven Group One winner.
