Ballyandy Looks Very Handy For The Supreme Novices Hurdle

The famous 'Cheltenham Roar' will mark the beginning of the 2017 Cheltenham Festival at 1.30pm on Tuesday afternoon and Ballyandy gets the nod from us for the Supreme Novices Hurdle...

  • 17 of the last 19 Supreme winners won their previous outing
  • Only 4 of the past 18 runners to start 3/1 or shorter have won the Supreme
  • However, the past 4 Supreme winners started 5/1 or shorter

Mullins Mob Handed

Willie Mullins boasts an excellent record in the Festival opener as he trained three successive Supreme winners from 2013 to 2015 and he can lay claim to the bookmakers' favourite this week.

Melon is an 11/4 market leader (Sky Bet) and that price is based more upon reputation than form as the French import has just an emphatic maiden hurdle victory to his name so far. A ten-length winner at Leopardstown, Melon is highly thought of by Mullins and it should be fascinating to see how the 5-year-old copes with the step up to Grade 1 level.

The Irish trainer's second string Bunk Off Early (6/1) also has claims in what is a relatively weak fourteen-runner renewal of the Supreme and the Zebedee gelding ran well in a narrow defeat in the Deloitte Novice Hurdle, albeit the way he couldn't match the strong-finishing Bacardys during the run-in must be a concern ahead of a crack at the daunting Cheltenham hill.

Mullins also goes with Crack Mome (9/1) and Cilaos Emery (16/1) this week.

Ballyandy Looks Very Handy

Nicky Henderson denied Mullins a fourth consecutive Supreme winner with Altior last year and he is dual-handed this time, with Dovecote Novices winner River Wylde (8/1) and Beyond Conceit (16/1), while Ben Pauling's High Bridge (16/1 with Ladbrokes) could be worth an each-way look after going three-from-three over hurdles.

We prefer to side with Ballyandy though as the son of Kayf Tara should relish the big field and pace that the Supreme offers. Last year's Champion Bumper winner got off the mark over hurdles at the fourth time of asking with a very impressive victory in the Betfair Hurdle and the entry of Nigel Twiston-Davies is our selection at 7/2 with Bet 365.
