Qaspal, trained by Phillip Hobbs and ridden supremely by Tony McCoy won the Imperial Cup today at Sandown Park after a fighting finish with stablemate Oldrik. The win has earned the six year old favouritism for the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockey’s Handicap Hurdle next week at the Cheltenham Festival with odds of around 3/1 with PaddyPower.
Should he win at Cheltenham of course, he will pick up a £75,000 bonus that has been put up by Bookmakers, Paddy Power as a bonus to the horse that can win the Imperial Cup and any race at the Festival. Qaspal has also been made favourite at 5/1 for the County Hurdle at the Festival next Friday as it is not clear at this stage which of the two races he will go for.

The horse has obviously been found in tip top form as he won a Conditional Jockey’s handicap last month at Kempton Park, which he followed up with a second win a week later in a novice hurdle over the same course and distance as the Imperial Cup. Now having completed his hat-trick he will go for a four timer next week.
Jockey, McCoy had to get down to 10st 3lb in order to ride him, the lowest he has been for over three years and which is a strong pointer as to what the champion jockey thought of the chances of the horse.
Qaspal is owned by the legendary owner/punter JP McManus, who will undoubtedly be backing his charge to win at the Festival next week and with excellent odds on offer from Paddy Power it would be an advisable act for most other punters to follow next week!.
